Okay, I'll put it another way. When Twilight was in the past, then it became the present. The future doesn't exist yet, so the 'present', season 5, didn't exist because it hadn't happened yet and, if Starlight had her way, would never happen. Only when Twilight was sucked through the hole back to the map did it become the 'present' and therefore would it even exist.

Yes. Twilight was the 'anchor'. So long as she wasn't in the objective 'present', the 'present' didn't exist at all but was in flux caused by the disrupted time-line.

Okay, got my head together now and I can write a proper response. Ugh... What a buzz-kill. Brilliant build-up, brilliant execution and brilliant peril. The dark alternate time-lines were wonderfully realised at every level. Starlight was a nicely-realised villain too, although her power levels and ability to avoid attacks were a bit overblown and implausible. Yet... in the end... it was killed by a badly-executed ending. I know what Josh Haber was trying to do, it's just that he failed to do it. He failed to write properly Twilight using the shock of seeing the dead future and her new knowledge of Starlight's past to reach out to her properly. Literally, it would have taken one decently written paragraph of dialogue to save the climax of the episode. Failure to do this turned it into a Deus Ex Machina 'wave a magic wand to beat the villain' ending that was a massive anticlimax and let-down. We'll never know how good it could have been, as it is, one badly-written ending kills the two-parter for me. BenRG's Rating: 6.5/10 -- Most of that comes from the beginning and middle of the episode. Just putting the world and time on notice that my tolerance for them turning Starlight Glimmer into one of the Mane Cast is very weak. If they even try to make her into a Sixth Ranger after this poorly-executed 'redemption', I could quite possibly walk away.

The problem for me is that the disappointing ending managed to destroy all the good work done up to that point. I can't forgive a fail at writing a decent ending just because the beginning and middle were epic.

A brilliant start and nice middle and then... the writing team clearly didn't know how to end the story so they decided to just magically make Twilight's rhetoric suddenly start being effective after it had failed every previous time. Basically, this could have been one of the greats but the wimp-out conclusion spoiled it for me.

Well, it looks like things are going to go pretty much as I've been expecting for a while: * Nightmare Moon and Celestia openly at war; * Flim and Flam have turned Sweet Apple Acres into a Saruman-esque razed paradise; * Pinkie and Fluttershy leading an armed resistance movement?!? I just hope that, in the alternate timeline, Twilight meets alternate!Starlight who helps her fix the trouble because no sane pony wants to live in hell.

Well, that was unexpectedly good! At first, this episode seemed to be determined to just play it by the numbers right down the line with cliché characterisation and cliché plot devices. Then they had Coloratura be Applejack's old friend and, in the last reel, turned it into a parable about the power of the Magic of Honesty to change you for the better. In that single reel, the character of the episode changed utterly and, instead, we had one of the strongest AJ episodes ever shown, showing how Honesty works for her and how she makes it work for others. So it is that Amy Keating Rogers signs of from Pony with arguably the two best episodes of the season and the best characterisations of their main characters too! As I've said before, whatever Disney paid for her services, they got a bargain because she is that good. What else can I say? Lena Hall did an excellent job for her first VA on Pony and I hope that 'Ra-ra' will be seen again. Maybe she and Sapphire can team up for a future episode to rock off everypony's socks! Daniel Ingram shows his musical flexibility again and we see again the quality that makes this show have its longevity. So the season comes to an end; next week we have the finalé and, after that, not too much of a hiatus. BenRG's Rating: 9/10

The whole book bag weight joke went completely over my head for a while and then I remembered that, as an Alicorn, Twilight now has Earth Pony strength. So, she can carry a lot more dead weight than normal unicorns and pegasi.

Well, that was an interesting one; I liked it more than Made in Manehattan, although it was nowhere as good as The Lost Treasure of Griffonstone. The high-point - The wonderfully comedically exaggerated Ma Hooffield and and Big Daddy McColt. It was something straight out of a Western parody. It was sort of predictable that Fluttershy would be the pony who triggered a solution to the problem. There seems to have be this underlying theme in MLP that Twilight's purely-academic approach is rarely very effective. There was a sense of the solution coming out of thin air but, in the end, there was a degree of logic to it. In the end, what was the point of fighting if it was just destroying the very thing that their ancestors originally began to war over? The moral? There is no cause so just that it justifies making innocents suffer. A good, workmanlike episode. Not spectacularly good but certainly not bad by any definition. BenRG's Rating: 7.5/10
