Like many people when you meet someone face to face you can do something to impress them in either how you dress, how you talk, or carry yourself in general but with online you can't do any of those things. The days of going into a business and saying I'll work for you for free today just so that you can see that I'm a hard worker are nearly gone because of all of the legal regulatory worries that business owner has. While the whinning is not productive this is the kind of market place that many college grads are entering or have entered into in the last 10 years. I know there was a report a while back of 2 students or 2 journalist submitting papers to academic journals and they accredited one to Harvard and another to a small state university and they were the exact same paper but the state one was rejected and the Harvard one accepted despite being the same paper. True the world is not fair but you would expect some reasonable amount of respect for one's abilities not just base it on where they went to school.
