I would suggest trying it w/o any meat before trying crab, I'm not sure that would work very well. I too like crab, it might work, but if you made it w/o meat you would have a better idea in your head if you thought it worked or not. You could also wait and add the crab at the end so you could just put a tiny bit of crab in one bowl and then if it is not good it wouldn't ruin the whole pot.

I don't know either, I was curious but then the grocery store was out of it so we went with the smoked salmon because I thought it might add something nice to it.

The recipe says you can make it without fish. While you are correct that wouldn't be true to the game, it would still have the main essence. The smoked salmon we used wasn't fishy at all, if you felt brave you could try it with that.

The recipe says you can go without fish and use chicken stock instead of fish stock. I think it would be yummy that way too. You could probably substitute the fish for chicken too if you still wanted meat in it.

I think it is perfect for fall/winter! Thanksgiving would be a great time to bring this out too. I was kind of thinking of trying to bring it to my in-laws next week. Just to see what everyone thought of it!

It tasted like 8 refill hearts! No, really it was kind of like a creamy squash soup with the nice smokey flavor of the fish. We put the fish in last so they were nice little bits to chew as well. Almost like an odd form of a chowder or something.
