Airsoft guns look so much like the real thing that you can hardly tell the difference when they are lying side-by-side with the real thing. There have been many cases this year around the nation where they have been used to threaten people, used for armed robberies, or mistaken by law enforcement. A boy in Texas was killed because of this. There is no good reason for them to look like the real thing. These kids are lucky they weren't shot.

I understand the school's difficulty, but there are still actions the school can take. For instance, they should notify all parents about this threat. Did school officials talk to the parents of the suspected tweeter? Does the school have a security guard, and did they beef up security in any way? Could they do a school-wide search of lockers for weapons? All of these options have been taken by other schools under similar circumstances.

We make it so easy in America for violent people like this one to commit shootings. This shooter was reported as dangerous by his father, but there was no mechanism to remove the guns or conceal carry permit from him. Now five innocent lives are lost.

Once again, a previously law-abiding gun owner runs amok and kills himself and others. This is a poster-boy for the NRA's philosophy that everyone should be armed. It's a sad commentary on our gun-crazy society that this man, known and reported by his parents for being potentially dangerous, was still able to retain his permit and his guns without at least being mentally evaluated.

Our men and women in blue are heroes every day. I'm glad of this memorial, for we need to remember those who have given the ultimate sacrifice to keep us safe, but the most fitting memorial is to take action to stop this from happening again. Namely, strengthening the background check system to prevent those who are dangerously mentally ill from legally purchasing a firearm (as happened in Officer Kilcullen's case).

Bullying is a serious problem in schools across the country. A friend of mine here in Eugene had her teen son beat up recently by some. There's a good movie on this right now, called "Bully." I encourage people to watch it. Those who are bullied often lash out violently at home or in school, sometimes with tragic consequences. Schools with anti-bully campaigns have reduced bullying by as much as 50%. The challenge is getting school officials to acknowledge that bullying is a problem and act on it.

If you are at a state university, "PBS", you and your husband are carrying guns in class against university policy, and could face strict sanctions from the university if found out. As of a couple months ago, state universities have again banned guns in buildings or carried by students or faculty. As far as being harmed by our fellow man, I am a survivor of a shooting.

This is distressing. Our background check system is very poor in Oregon, particularly in regard to mental health records or drug offense records. We also need to do more to legislate prohibitions to gun carrying on school and college campuses, libraries, and other sensitive public buildings. With more conceal carry guns, there will be more accidents and shootings in public, as well as in the homes where all those guns are stored (often unsecured, despite having children home). We, as a society, need to be less afraid of our fellow man. It is a vicious cycle: with more guns comes more fear. With more fear come more gun sales.

Thankfully no one was hurt and the wanted men didn't open fire. I'm glad they were caught. It is too easy for felons to get firearms (all they have to do in Oregon is respond to a private or online gun ad -- no background check, ID, or paperwork required).

If "more guns = less crime," then why does America, with more guns per capita than any other nation in the world by far, have far more homicide shootings? And why do states with more lax gun laws have higher deaths by shootings? More guns = more gun deaths, not the other way around.

Actually, "sick", up to 40% of sales of guns used in crimes are from private gun sales, which require no background check, ID, or paperwork in Oregon. Simply requiring a 5-minute background check for private sales would drastically reduce availability of guns to convicted criminals and force them to get a knowing accomplice. Also, guns are FAR more lethal than knives and other weapons, so, yes, the gun is part of the factor, as well as the person wielding it.
