KVAL - Eugene, OR : 14 dead as gunman opens fire at Batman screening in Colorado | National & World News | Eugene News,

Another month, another mass shooting. Now begins a cycle of condolences and shock from legislators, empty calls to do something about it, and silence from the NRA, then the fervor will die down and nothing will be done by our leaders to stop the next one as the gun lobby pays them off. Don't let it happen. It's time to do more to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people, like requiring a background check for private gun sales, prohibiting sale of assault rifles and large ammo clips, and better mental health reporting to the background check system.

The minimum age for gun purchase or possession in Oregon is 18. This man is 20. Look it up before you accuse, loser. http://www.oregonlaws.org/ors/166.250

I took a shooting course, taught by a police trainer, wherein he repeated many times that you do not pull your weapon unless you intend to kill. Shooting to wound is difficult and less likely to stop an attacker. But who knows, really, what this idiot was thinking.

It's sad that diagnosed mentally ill people are still able to legally purchase and possess firearms in Oregon. The state is trying (slowly) to update the NICS background check system with the names of dangerously mentally ill people, but not fast enough, and it doesn't help at all for private sales, where sellers are not required to run a background check or even ask any questions.

You don't fire your gun at someone to wound them. You shoot to kill. It's a basic lesson. Plus, one of the child victims reported that the first person the guy tried to shoot, he put the gun to the boy's chest and pulled the trigger, but it misfired. If the shooter just wanted to scare them away, it would have been easy enough to shoot up, away from them. Clearly he didn't.

We are number one in the world among advanced nations for gun-related deaths. Switzerland is (a very distant) second or third, depending on which list you look at, because of their gun policies. Unlike us, they require extensive training for gun ownership, show a valid reason for gun ownership, gun licensing and registration, and a background check for all gun sales, including private sales (unlike most states, including Oregon). Because their death-by-gun rates are higher than any other European country, voices in their legislature are calling for reform. So, yes, I am familiar.

Is that the story? The article doesn't say this. And did all three kids that he tried to kill trying to attack and kill him? If this is true, then why weren't the kids arrested? Given their age, I have a hard time believing that they were trying to beat him to death or that shooting them to death was an appropriate response.

It's not the gun I oppose, it's the ease of which people like Mr. Engels are able to get them and use them. Sadly, cases like this one and tens of thousands of other suicides, accidents, and murders prove this statistic correct. The gun itself is just a hunk of metal ... made to kill with just a finger twitch. I'd bet Mr. Engels would have echoed your sentiment (and mischaracterization of me) too, prior to flipping out and becoming a murderer with that weapon he purchased.

Have you read the paper? I have. When you actually read it, it doesn't fit the NRA's reading of it. The peer-review process and the experimental setup for it negate personal bias, despite what the gun lobby would like to think. Despite the NRA talking points, "gun control" isn't about disarming all people. It's about controlling guns enough to keep them out of the hands of those who would abuse them. I love your red herring arguments (cars, cigarettes, etc.) They apply not at all, and there are plenty of statistics to show that regulation of cars and cigarettes have led to vastly significant drops in fatalities caused by them. And if you are suggesting that we shouldn't have laws to prevent abuse of guns, then you are clearly pro-criminal, or you wish for a society without laws (since no law "prevents" murder -- rather they provide a way to deter, prosecute, and stop repetition).

Here is the study where this statistic came from: Kellermann, Arthur L. et al., “Injuries and Deaths Due to Firearms in the Home,” Journal of Trauma, Injury, Infection, and Critical Care, 45(2) (1998): 263-267 It's a paper written by professional Ph.D. researchers and published in an internationally renowned, peer-reviewed journal. Does that still count as "bunk" to you?
