The only problem I have with this choice is that he's only #48 on the list. I have never seen a movie where Claude Rains gave a bad performance.

I'd also suggest The Informer (1935). A retelling of the story of Judas, it's the first Oscar won by John Ford. Also, if I remember right, Victor McLacglen also won an Oscar for playing the lead.

I notice that "Going My Way" is on the list, but not "The Bells of St. Mary's" (or, at least, I don't see it). Both movies feature the same priest character played by Bing Crosby, and both are quite definitely Catholic in character.

Big Hollywood : 'True Grit' Review: Talented Cast and Crew Bite Off More Than They Can Chew

It's true that most remakes suck. However, there are a couple of other exceptions. The Maltese Falcon with Bogart was a remake. Also, The Magnificent Seven and Fistful of Dollars are great movies--maybe not as great as the Kurosawa originals, but still great nonetheless.

Big Hollywood : L.A. Times: Lack of Christmas Movies a Business Decision, Not Cultural

“The way to do a big-budget film these days is to take stories that everyone in the world knows and take them in a new direction,” Roth told us. “But no one’s come up with a fresh way to do a holiday movie, so we’re all doing it with other kinds of stories.” (Roth is doing just that with “Snow White” and “The Wizard of Oz.”) Wait, someone is remaking Snow White and The Wizard of Oz???!!! Ugh.

Shame about The Tourist. I'd been interested in seeing it after learning that it was directed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, who did The Lives of Others. Now, I think I'll give it a pass.

Brilliant movie. It not only shows how oppressive Communism really was, but it's also an ingenious thriller. I was on the edge of my seat from the moment Dreyman decided to write his article criticizing the East German regime.

Another tidbit about High Noon. A modified version of the movie poster was used to encourage people to vote for Solidarity in Poland's 1989 elections. The Communists certainly didn't care for it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_noon#Cultural_i...

High Noon was written by Carl Foreman, a blacklisted writer, and it's very clearly a blacklisting allegory. John Wayne said it was the most anti-American movie he'd ever seen and teamed up with Howard Hawks to make Rio Bravo (also a great movie) in response. All that notwithstanding, I love High Noon. Ultimately, it's about a man who's got to decide whether he's going to fight or run. That dilemma is universal and transcends politics. That enables High Noon to endure and to rise above the politics of its screenwriter.

Awesome movie, and Mifune was great. The director of the Karate Kid originally wanted to cast Mifune as Mr. Miyagi, and Mifune did a reading. Of course, the role ultimately went to Pat Morita, who did a great job, but Mifune as Mr. Miyagi would sure have been interesting.
