I think it can be done well, if done carefully. Across the Universe is a great example--the reveal was powerful and I certainly hadn't guessed at it beforehand. Another example is The False Prince by Jennifer Neilsen. It's written in first person, but you discover later on that the narrator is unreliable and keeps quite a few secrets from the reader. It was really well done, IMO, so I thought it was effective.

Wonderful analysis, as always, Susan. I love Neville's transformation throughout the series--he's yet another example of how well J.K. Rowling developed not only her major characters, but her large cast of minor characters as well. The last movie was really fantastic in showcasing his character, including some of my favorite moments. :)

I've found that it definitely helps to get writing done before you're spent and low on energy. Some people work best at the end of the day or in the dead of the night, but others find it easier to get work done in the early morning hours before they've started their day. Personally, I always feel great when I accomplish something in the morning--I then go through the rest of the day knowing no matter what happens, I at least met my writing goal. :)
