As far as I can see the GAA is in quite awkward position. Few Unionists will join due to an underlying nationalist ideology. Few Protestants would join due to the fact that so few are in the organisation, creating a vicious circle. Therefore it is understandable why it may be viewed as a sectarian organization despite efforts to the contrary. I don't think its a simple matter of hating non British institutions. Having said that Brollys comments don't make the organisation come across well and only reinforce the sectarian perception.

But even in my grammar school, A level arts subjects were seen as useless. You were there to get the best financial start in life, and that meant Maths and Science. An appreciation of Art could come later, as entertainment. Saying, that we had a poet and a playwright as English teachers ...both execellent. So the opportunity was there and I could've learnt a lot from them, if I hadn't been focussed elsewhere. Only in my 40s do I appreciate the values of the Arts.

Agreed, there are a lot of things we don't need. Nationalism, Unionism, Communism even Democracy. Just because we don't NEED them, doesn't mean to say we shouldnt have them. Utilitarianism just doesn't do it for me personally. BTW, I do appreciate the your argument, even if I do not accept it's conclusion.

Yes, but opinions are not static and communities change. The audience would not be the same now as it was then. I think it would be popular, given sufficent exposure. After all we know have the Sam Thompson bridge, so that should renew interest.
I agree with you about the MAC; great building and facilty for Belfast. As far as the DUP is concerned, some of their councillors actually do a great job "on the ground" irrespective of party politics. I am socially consevative but have no interest in British nor Irish nationalism. Who can I vote for ? Choice is limited and unlike other political parties in Ireland and GB, there seems to be no effort made to attract voters from "the other" community.
