Glenn talked a lot today about finding one politician who "gets it" and will sacrifice everything to do what is right. Here are two articles of one Senator doing just that. I've decided to vote out all the legislators in my state who don't stand up like Senator Coburn.

Can you all tell me who in your areas is doing the same thing and standing for the principles and values, rather than just for the next election?

Consequence #1: Curfews, Time Out, or Grounding

If they do not follow these rules, we commit that we will institute curfews (time out, grounding, etc.) or term limits via the voting booth on election day.

Consequence #2: Loss of Allowance

Failure to follow these rules will also result in loss of allowance via the voting booth on election day.

As a united family, by committing to these rules and their enforcement, we now have a foundation to begin rebuilding our faith and trust in our government. In the coming months, we will have a wonderful opportunity to openly discuss and debate with our legislators and between ourselves such topics as fair taxation, government spending, and healthcare issues (among others). But for now, as citizens we need to agree that it is OUR duty to take back our home, set and enforce the rules, and take back our responsibilities to this country that we never should have given up in the first place. It’s up to us. And it’s time…

Rule #7:We commit to holding them accountable for adhering to these rules

We admit that we have failed in monitoring our legislators from our respective states. We commit that we will begin holding them accountable starting today. This new accountability includes developing and posting a “report card” on the web that will reflect their grades on following these established rules and how they have voted on all proposed legislation. It may also identify lobbyists and firms with which they have taken campaign funds or associate with frequently so that we can monitor their propriety. This new accountability also includes the following consequences:

Rule #6:We will commit to giving a “results- based” allowance

Legislators will be paid based on their ability to follow these rules. If they choose not to adhere to the rules, we commit to rescinding their allowance on the next election day. We will commit to instituting term limits via the voting booth. If our respective legislators follow the rules, they may return to office. If they do not follow the rules, their actions will have consequences. Finally, once their service is complete, they should voluntarily terminate their salary and benefits and begin work on legislation to do that permanently for other legislators. If they don’t, we will.

Rule #5:We will commit to allowing the freedom to fail and to do no harm

We expect that as legislators they will make some congressional mistakes. If decisions are based on the principals and values of our founding fathers, the cherished documents, and common sense then they will be allowed the freedom to fail. We also commit to understanding that sometimes doing nothing is the right thing. As a legislator the first rule should be similar to a doctor: “Above all, do no harm”. We will understand that there are times to act and then there are times to hold firm in the face of crisis until collectively we can develop a rational and reasonable solution. We will support them in this effort and encourage them to “do the right thing” despite the pressure to act. We will also encourage them to spend more time in our home states than in Washington, D.C. so that they may stay grounded as a citizen legislator. The less time they are in Washington, the better. That was, after all, the original plan.

Rule #4:We will commit to doing our homework

We will expect that every bill that comes before congress will be read by the legislator. It is their responsibility to ensure that proper time limits are given to read, analyze, discuss and then vote. In order to do this, it is also the legislator’s responsibility to work with congress to add a provision to reduce bill sizes so that one bill represents one issue. Piggybacking multiple issues, earmarks and pork into one bill just creates more opportunity for waste and abuse. It also makes it more difficult for both the citizen and the legislators to monitor. In turn, we as citizens commit to holding the legislators more accountable for every individual bill that they now approve. We also expect them to earn occasional extra credit by reading the history of our government, our forefathers, and how we became to be the amazing country that we are today. We will commit to sending those books if they do not read them on their own. We also commit to holding them accountable if they put party or party politics above our country. Peer pressure is no excuse for ignoring the responsibility to the constituents and the country.

Rule #3:We will all commit to financial responsibility and accountability

We will balance our “family” budget annually. We must look to reduce expenses, increase income (when reasonable, feasible and fair to all taxpayer classes), and begin a long-term plan of debt reduction with a fixed date for elimination. We all must sacrifice by cutting expenses, including those expenses that may affect our home state and local special projects. We must commit to work together to make the budget and expenditure (including military expenditures) process more transparent and visible on-line for all to see and understand. Also, we commit to reassure our legislators that we will not punish them for making decisions that cut pork or earmarks for our local projects, since it is for the good of the nation as a whole. We owe this to our future generations.

Family Rules

Rule #1:We will only parent our own children

Each citizen or group will take responsibility for only the senators and representatives from their home state. Let other citizens and states handle their own congressmen or women. In this way the task is not so overwhelming and it will require each of us to do our part. This is also effective with state and local government.

Rule #2:We will commit to regular family time and family devotions

We will meet and communicate with our legislators regularly and remind them frequently of the foundation on which our family was created. Our discussions must be rooted in the principals and values from the cherished documents from our founding fathers (Declaration of Independence, Constitution and the Bill of Rights) in order to teach those legislators who may not know them or may not remember them. Call a meeting, write a letter, and develop a relationship so they know who they are coming home to, but we will keep them rooted in our cherished documents. Rest assured that the lobbyists and special interests will be there in our absence.
