I&#039;ve found that the people that make that statement to me just don&#039;t comprehend depression and/or Invisible Illness in a way that it would be productive for me to carry-on a conversation with them. They were programmed to believe something, and they are perpetuating that myth by saying, &quot;You don&#039;t have any reason to be sad or depressed, &quot; as if they knew everything going on in my life, in my brain, in my neural pathways... something that I can&#039;t even know all of the time. &quot;A reason&quot; as they often mean it... doesn&#039;t necessarily have to exist. And it oftentimes does not. I don&#039;t try to respond to their statement, or correct them, or G-d forbid <em>teach them something</em>. I find, that for me, the best way to handle that statement is to breathe it straight out of me, and find a way to politely end the conversation and disengage with that person, at that time. Then, I find another person or a ritual (journaling, hot shower, walk outside) that will help ground me, whether I need to cry or vent or just be quiet for a while. A long time ago I was taught the concept of sorting all of the feedback (and input) I receive into bins in my head marked &quot;keep,&quot; &quot;toss,&quot; and &quot;sort.&quot; I do that. If there&#039;s something I&#039;m not sure about, I&#039;ll put it in the &quot;sort&quot; bin and go back to it later. If I know that it&#039;s not helpful (like the statement you&#039;ve referenced), I send it straight to &quot;toss.&quot; I&#039;m not big on conflict when it doesn&#039;t need to exist, which is why I prefer to duck out quietly and go find myself some support and nourishment elsewhere. That person obviously doesn&#039;t have it to offer in that capacity (which doesn&#039;t make them mean or bad)... just a fact.
