Oh please, you bring abortion up as a cause to school shootings? Totally uncalled for. Maybe these kids don't get enough of something at home, like attention from parents who are busy with their own lives and don't have time to get to know the children they have. Morality is not the problem. Religion is not the answer. Parents who pay attention to their kids and notice the small changes that would occur in a child's personality and demeanor that would precipitate an action this grand. This was planned, so don't tell me that these kids were acting perfectly fine at home.

KATU - Portland, OR : Should sobriety checkpoints be reinstated in Ore.? | KATU.com - Portland, Oregon | Local

I'm good with outlawing cars actually. People have proven over and over again that they can't handle driving and with the climate change issue we would be better off not to mention healthier without them. I honestly think that you are way too worried about the government running your life. You want total privacy and the ability to do what ever you see fit because you see yourself as an intelligent person that makes the right choices but you are not taking into consideration the high number of idiots that we share this fine state with. Who is going to rein in them? Who is going to keep them from killing others in a senseless, preventable way, you? So the way I see it if we don't allow the government to step in occasionally and put laws in place to help us rein in the stupidity then we fail as a society. Not everyone is intelligent , reliable and trustworthy. what do we do about them? Wait until they kill someone, someone who is a worthy member of society? Yes life is dangerous and we could be killed any number of ways everyday but why not try to do something about the preventable ways?

The penalty is set up to hit people where it hurts, the checkbook. It's supposed to make people think twice about driving after drinking. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to work for most people. I don't drive if I drink either, I don't see it as a terrible burden. I'm with you, it just isn't worth it.

Here's a solution, forget the checkpoints, instead make the penalty greater. Get a DUI and be fined half a million and lose your license forever. Kill someone while driving intoxicated and be executed. Realistic....hardly. People drive all the time uninsured, unlicensed, too fast, drunk, tired, etc., so obviously no one cares about the "laws" so what are we left with? We are left with trying to prevent tragedy before it happens and if checkpoints will cut down on all of the things that I listed then it is a reasonable thing.

But people die when others drink and drive. I don't see how waiting until the end result of someone killing someone else due to intoxication is an answer. If a check point can save someone's life, including yours or your loved ones I'm all for it. I'm just sorry to hear that you are willing to sacrifice those you love in the name of your so called "rights."

Woohoo! Don't let this "nanny state" take away all of our consitutional rights! We should be able to drive fast, drunk and not be pulled over. If you can't get out of the way then stay off the roads! Everyone should be carrying a gun and have the right to shoot anyone that might look like trouble so we can protect ourselves and our love ones. Close the schools with their pervy teachers and lets homeschool all of our kids so that they aren't "indoctrinated" into homo loving whiners. Right........ I don't think that the framers of the constitution had drinking and driving in mind when they wrote it. I don't think that the fathers of our constitution would agree with the way that we hide behind something that was written over 200 years ago just so we can not evolve and put the right to drink and drive above saving lives.

I was hit on by many men as a teen and none of them were teachers or priests, most of them were men with families that I babysat for. It happens all the time but we only hear about the teachers and the priests. Having said that don't condemn the man before his trial, maybe he's guilty and maybe he isn't but it's not for the media and you yahoos to decide. There is a chance that he just pissed off some kid and this is their retribution, to say that the teacher touched them or made a suggestion and get them in trouble. it happens a lot, but it doesn't get reported because it is usually groundless. I would trust a teacher with my kids a lot faster than the average guy down the street. There's a reason that "barely legal" porn is so popular and it isn't because of the teachers.

Work for free?! Lol! Never! It's not the fault of the citizens that the country is in a financial bind, so why should we pay the price. I have a neighbor that works for the state. she drives a company car and just finished putting a 2 room addition on her house. She always jokes about how she's overpaid for what she does. She's a transportation manager or something like that. And the governor wants teachers to work for free, what a joke!

No, nothing will bring back a dead child but it's not always about the children. If a dog attacks anyone, young or old or somewhere in between then the dog needs to be euthanized and the owners held legally responsible. I'm all for large mandatory fines for any dog running loose, because maybe, just maybe if the fine is large enough people will pay attention and not leave that gate unlocked or let their dogs out for a run. Anyone that owns a dog should responsible for that dog and if your dog commits a crime that was preventable by you then you should be held responsible. If more people had to do jail time for their dog killing another animal or attacking a person then chances are there would be fewer people owning dogs that they can't take care of or handle.

KATU - Portland, OR : Education hit hard in proposed budget cuts | KATU.com - Portland, Oregon| News

I taught at the high school level for 5 years, unfortunately I had to give it up and go into the private sector because of pay. I started at $38k right out of college with a masters degree. After 5 years I moved up to $41K and I couldn't afford to buy a house or support a family. Yet the coachs get their teaching salary plus an extra 6K a semester to coach a sport with several (also paid) assistant coaches. It's sad to me that high school students are allowed, even encouraged to play sports even though they aren't passing core education classes. Out of 8 classes they only need to be passing 6 to play. If we really want to get serious about education in this state then lets cut the sports programs down, the extra adminstration, including the counseling department and fund good teachers and equipment. Because in the end if you can't read or do basic math then the glory of your baseball days in high school aren't worth a damn.

Dog owners should be held responsible for their dogs through hefty fines and legal ramifications maybe that will be incentive to keep them in the yard and train them properly. This dog obviously has issues probably due to the lack of training and care from the owners, being "farmed out" is the first clue. Poor thing should be destroyed and the owners and "foster owners" held financially and legally responsible.

I agree. And that's why everyone should be held responsible for the actions of their dogs since it is our job to raise them. All dogs can be agressive. I worked as a vet tech for years and the only dog tha ever bit me was a pomeranian. I am against the profiling and punishment of certain dogs.
