Big Hollywood : Trailer Talk: New 'Amazing Spider-Man' Spot Serves Up the Action ... Too Much of the Plot?

I hav to say, I'm excited. Especially since this new trailershow Spidey wisecracking (just for a few seconds, but it's the principal of the thing). I have to say, complain about the lack of creativity in Hollywood all you want, but the last few years' worth of superhero movies have all been pretty good. The Marvel movies have been awesome, Dark Knight as great, X-Men First Class was neat, and now Spider looks cool. Only real outliers is Green Lantern which, well, was absolutely terribly beyond comprehension, and deserves its own plinkett review.

Big Hollywood : Mark Ruffalo Aligns Avengers with Occupy Movement

Oh whatever. Buffalo can scream about the one percent all he wants. He's an idiot that doesn't understand his own movie. The simple fact is the Marvel movies have been the most consistently conservative movies in years. I have o doubt this is completely unintentional considering Stan Lee is an admitted communist, and most comic book creators are borderline Stalinists, but think about it: Billionaire weapons maker= Good guy Soldier= Good guy The military= Good guys American Spies= Good guys Senators= Bad guys Terrorists= Bad guys Fascists= Bad guys

Can you imagine if Quo Vadis were made today? No doubt the ancient Christians would be portrayed as stupid, bigoted and anti-science (even though it didn't exist yet). And the filmmaker would do everything in his power to make you root for Rome and torturers.

Big Hollywood : Trailer Talk: 'John Carter of Mars' Is No 'Prince of Persia'

There's only one reason I'm looking forward to John Carter of Mars, and that's because it's being directed by Andrew Stanton. He's the Pixar director of Finding Nemo and Wall-E. I've never met the man, but one of my good friend's was his right hand man at Pixar. According to him Andre Stanton is a huge, dedicated science fiction fan, and more importantly, a committed Christian. I have high hopes for the movie.

Big Hollywood : Morning Call Sheet: No Plastic Surgery For You, Smell-O-Vision, and Tom Hanks Offers Refunds

I have to say, I read the Pixar article and I just got sad. As an animation fan, and aspiring animator, I'm really depressed at how low (and rapidly) Pixar is falling. 4 out of 5 of their movies since Up are going to be sequels (Toy Story 3, Cars 2, Brave, Monster Inc. 2 titled Monsters University, and following that up with Toy Story 4). Once an original studio with a unique voice, that worked really hard to keep themselves unique and on their toes. They brought in Brad Bird from outside the studio specifically to bring in a new voice, and keep themselves fresh. Not they're just spitting out sequel after sequel. It's sad really. If Pixar won't stand up for originality, who will?

Big Hollywood : Official Synopsis for 'Man of Steel' Released

Man, what crap! This what killed Superman Returns, all the handwringing and emo bullcrap! That's why Captain America was so refreshing, it was about a guy who wanted to go out and punch bad guys. He didn't have to think about how he was going to use his powers, or spending 70 minutes out of 90 being a delicate, tortured soul. He knew what he wanted to do and did it, like a man. I am so tired of all this superhero-as-Hamlet/Holden Caulfield bullcrap. Give me Superman's origin in a five minute flashback at the beginning of the movie, since everyone knows it. Have the rest of the movie be Superman fighting off an alien invasion singlehandedly, because he's #$%&ing Superman and doesn't need any help to deal with a large scale alien attack.

Big Hollywood : Wow! First Look at Henry Cavill as Superman

Well, the costume is a little dark, but that could just be the picture. Also, it appears he's punched something, or at least touched it forcefully. That alone makes this picture better than the entirety of the Superman Returns movie.

Big Hollywood : 'Captain America' Review: A Lost Opportunity

Two last thoughts to add. 1) My wife is not a comic book fan. My wife doesn't like superhero movies. When the movies started, she had a frown on her face and rumpled brow. When the movie ended, and the lights came up, she turned to me said "Ok, I'm really looking forward to the Avengers, and I want to see Thor now" 2) The audience I saw this with cheered at the movie. But not at the end, not when Captain America beat the Red Skull, not even during one of the actions scenes. Everyone cheered when the Uncle Sam "I Want You" poster came up during the credits. And I saw Captain America in San Francisco! In a packed house!

If I were to sum up Captain America and describe it to someone who'd never seen it I'd describe it thus: It's one third superhero movie (a good one), one third Indiana Jnes adventure (again, a good one), and one third classic World War II movie like Kelly's Heroes or the Dirty Dozen.

I'm going to vigorously disagree with, well, everything here except for the description of the movie. Captain America was, quite frankly, the most fun I've had at the movies since the original Iron Man movie (and I actually had more fun). I thought the movie was absolutely fantastic. I thought the characters were very compelling. Agent Carter was great. She was touch, but she wasn't anachronistic like so many other strong female characters in movies that place int he past. Tommy Lee Jones Colonel was awesome. He reminded me so much of my Army Vet grandfather. And Evans did an amazing job as Cap. He managed to play him as scrawny, soft-spoken, and surprisingly funny, without making Cap goofy. He did a great job. It's all summed up in the question and answer: "What makes you so special?" "Nothing. I'm just a kid from Brooklyn". I'm perplexed as to how conservative aren't going crazy for this movie. It's about a guy dressed up as an American flag beating up bad guys. And who are the bad guys? An elitist planner who thinks he knows how to run the world better than the ordinary people, goose stepping bullies, and a corrupt, idiotic big government senator. And who was Captain America, just a kid from Brooklyn, an ordinary person overlooked by the elites. Plus, he wants to fight. When he's taken into be a symbol, he has no real problem with being an American or being a symbol of America, but he doesn't want to the easy road. Selling war bonds and being on stage is easy, but ineffective. Going out and actually fighting is hard. Seriously guys, give up on the Captain America hating. Go get some popcorn and a coke and have a good time at the movies (come on, who doesn't love that ending with the motion graphics WWII posters?) You know, now that I think about it, the government never comes off well in Marvel movies. They're always ineffectual at best, corrupt at worst. The only ones that come off well are the CIA stand-ins SHIELD.

I got to talk to one of the special effects guys the other day (I live in San Francisco, so you see a lot of ILM and Pixar guys), and he said it, and these are his exact words "Captain America is gonna be a damn fine film". SFX guys have no real attachment to their movies. If something's bad, they'll tell you (he went on and on about how terrible Transformers are and how shallow a man Michael Bay is), but was genuinely excited to have had the chance to work on Cap.
