totalBarca : Man of the Match: Hamburg SV 1-2 FC Barcelona

It's a little sad, but it must be said; our young talents at center back aren't that great (yet). Muniesa is talented, but he is extremely injury prone, and now will probably be unavailable for the season. Bartra is decent at best, and although he might be okay for some games, he isn't a guy who is ready to contribute in big matches this season. The rest of the talents (Sergi Gomez, Ayala, Ie) are years away from being first team material. I usually want to refrain from buying young players for the first team, in fear that they might block the way for the young talents. But right now, I think it's needed. A young CB who is fully ready to contribute in big matches is needed I think. Javi Martinez is a dream, as he is awesome and can also play at DM (we need that as well), but if not, there are other decent options as well.

So because I think Cazorla is better than Cesc, I am on drugs? What kind of drugs would make me think that?

The truth is that Santi Cazorla is very underrated, and is a world class midfielder/winger. We definitely don't need another midfielder or winger, we won't buy him. But I like him so much, I wouldn't be against his purchase. If only to make sure he stays in Spain, and doesn't go to Madrid, I would go after him. And honestly, I wouldn't put it against him to earn a starting spot for us. For me, he is a better player than Modric and Cesc. But we aren't about to sell Cesc to make room for him :p.

I really don't understand all the criticism towards Javi Martinez. Of course we won't pay 40M for him, we don't have that kind of money. But he is a fantastic player who would add obvious quality to both the midfield and attack. Last season, he was one of the best center backs in Europe. Are people worried because he didn't earn a place at the Euros? Well, neither did Llorente. And he is Spain's best striker. Del Bosque is always very reluctant to change his lineup, and he was never going to drop Alonso. At CB, he has never played beside Pique, so he didn't want to take the risk there either. Doesn't mean he isn't good enough. He should be a starter for Spain soon. Why are people talking about "proper" CB? Midfielders and wingers making transitions to the back-line frequently turn out to be brilliant moves. No, Mascherano isn't the only case.

totalBarca : The Front: El Mundo Deportivo (15.07.2012)

We were looking for a new CB before Keita left. Now that Keita is gone, we also need a new DM. We cannot simply ignore that gaping hole and hope to buy someone who is good at both CB and DM. Even if it's someone good like Javi Martinez. We need two players. Although if we manage to get Javi, or at least someone near his quality, then maybe we will be safe simply keeping Bartra.

totalBarca : Muniesa close to Ajax move?

I think this move is definitely for the best. He's not ready to contribute much to the first team yet. At LB, he is no where near Adriano or Alba, an at CB, he is behind Bartra (who I wouldn't mind staying).

totalBarca : Lombán, a new addition to the B team

Balliu/Ilie - Sergi/Ayala - Lomban/Edgar Lee - Planas/Grimaldo. Decent enough defense, although nothing compares to Montoya-Bartra-Fontas-Muniesa :p. The midfield also seems good, with Roberto/Joan - Agostinho/Gustavo - Espinosa/Quesada. The talent is there in abundance, although I expect the team to take a long while to before they perform well. The chemistry will take some time to build, especially since a lot of these players are very young, even for B team standards. There are more question marks in the attack. Deulofeu/Lobato-Rafinha/Dongou-Kiko/Miguel Sainz. Rodri should definitely be sold so that the others will have more playing time. But then the attack will be very young and inexperienced. Miguel Angel Sainz is an interesting player, but he is very young. Dongou isn't ready to lead the line permanently, but Rafinha still isn't fully adapted to the false 9 role (he really shouldn't be playing there). Kiko showed signs of improvement towards the end of last season, and I trust him to be a decent winger next season. But the only certainty is Deulofeu. And yet, he is very young and needs to learn humility before he can be given the responsibility of leading an attack. Overall, I expect next season to start off pretty roughly and chaotically, but there is a lot to look forward to, and hopefully Eusebio does a better job of managing his players. There are also some positives for the B team, looking ahead to the new season. Unlike last year, the first team shouldn't have to take the B team's best players for cover. And despite the young age of the squad, there are no dead weights, and every player is of sufficient quality (except for Rodri...).

Last year in his contract, has the desire to join Barcelona, yes, this was a bit more than I expected. Not saying we overpaid, simply saying this wasn't some amazing business transaction. If he had many years left on his contract, then yes, he would easily be worth over 20M.

I'm just hoping Rosell leaves soon. I was sort of optimistic at first, but he has severely disappointed me. All his mistakes, added with his complete lack of understanding of the club's honour and reputation, not to mention his questionable dealings in Brazil, have made his term a poor one. Getting a decent price for Sanchez doesn't excuse him.

totalBarca : OFFICIAL: Vilanova signs for two years

Javi Martinez is as true a CB as anyone. Sure, he is new there, but he is a CB now. Being able to play in multiple positions doesn't make you any less good in those positions, it just makes you versatile. Honestly, near the very end of the season, he struggled, just like the rest of his team. But for the most part, I was honestly, TRULY, as impressed by him as I was by the likes of Mascherano, Kompany, Hummels, and even Silva. I would consider Javi Martinez as one of the CBs of the year. Struggled for the first month to adapt, then tired near the end. But for the bulk of it, he was Bilbao's most important player. He also did the best job of defending Messi out of any defender this season, for all that's worth. And also, his versatility is one of the main reasons I prefer him. Right now, we need a LB and CB. But it is looking more likely that Keita will leave. If that's the case, we need a replacement. Not just a sub DM (Masch could do that if we bought another CB, or Thiago even), but also his box-to-box role. When given license to roam forward, he is arguably our most important player in helping break down defenses. We need that skill-set on the team, we can't simply forget about it. Javi Martinez can be a brilliant CB, and also play that role when needed. With Javi, we can breathe easy if we do sell Keita. With Vertonghen, even Hummels, that's not the case. No one else can play in midfield to balance the team, then sprint forward to meet a cross and destabilize the opposition. I would be in full support of buying a cheaper CB, if it meant we were using the money to pursue a CF. Since Tito has confirmed we aren't (kill me now), and we are buying Alba for around 10M, then I expect Barca to use the money to get a crack CB. Javi gives us everything we're looking for.
