Erickson has those moments but overwhelms them with awesome humor and great action sequences. Corwin is definitely one of the best characters ever written in fantasy. Zelazny's standalone novel Lord of Light is probably one of the best until today. the previously mentioned Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erickson is great. Prince of Nothing is simply unreadable.
