The fact is that a lot of people saw this one coming. It was as predictable as it was unnecessary. It is all the more unfortunate because every dollar the company now spends on lawyers and legal actions is one more dollar that cannot be re-invested in the company, it people and its future.

How terribly unfortunate. My sincere condolences to all Cirque Du Soleil employees. Cirque Du Soleil is an extraordinarily professional production and Cedar Rapids is very fortunate to have them here. It is one of the most incredible displays of talent, planning, discipline and teamwork you will ever see. Well worth the cost of admission. If you've never seen a Cirque Du Soleil production, you are missing something very special.

Had the student told him he was a "practicing Christian" and that said table was actually a "Christian altar", would the teacher have praised his work? I suspect so. If this teacher feels he must encourage Christianity as part of his job, he certainly has many viable options going forward. There are many Christian schools that would embrace his philosophy and beliefs. If he is drawn so strongly to his faith that working in a secular environment is difficult, then he should take that into account in his next job search. And if so, he needs to get started on that search real soon. I would not dream of challenging his religous beliefs. We should all be free to pursue the things that give our lives deep meaning. But his actions in this context are another matter.

The solution seems both obvious and simple to me. People who object to gay marriage on religious grounds should probably not marry someone of the same gender. I would never dream of forcing you to marry someone your religion prohibits you from considering. But imposing your religious beliefs on me is not only wrong, it is unacceptable. Please have no doubt. It is the line in the sand. My tolerance of your church and your beliefs is strong. While these are not my beliefs, I will defend your right to believe and worship as you see fit. In the interest of a peaceful and coexistent society, I will not interfere. What you choose for yourself and for your your children in your own home and among your fellow believers is yours alone. But let me be absolutely crystal clear about this. That tolerance ends at my front door. If you cannot accept that, then we have problem. The time when I could be brow beaten into submission to your flavor of theology has long since past. And in the end, I hope you will acknowledge that we will both fair far better if we allow each other our differences and not insist on changing the other.

Perhaps this is an idea who's time has come. It is also time to make it illegal to drive while taking antidepressant medications. We now have conclusive evidence showing that antidepressants such as Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, Cymbalta, Celexa, etc. significantly impair driving ability. People cannot concentrate and their reaction time slows to dangerous levels. How many fatalities have involved people taking these medications? We don't know because we currently don't report these numbers. But it certainly time we began doing so. People taking these medications should not be behind the wheel. They are a clear and present danger to themselves and others.
