Just Another iPhone Blog : Tweetie 2: ‘New App’ - Will Spit On Existing ‘Old App’ Users

oh.. cool. I didn't realize there were that many users. Then yes... Tweetie should be able to figure out something. I agree that they should get $$ for their efforts (otherwise, what is the incentive to continually develop?).

One more thing on this.... I don't know if you have been following the uproar of the NetNewsWire for Mac (not iPhone) upgrade debacle. In case you haven't... you probably recall that NetNewsWire was a paid app before it was a free app. Well, now it is a paid app again if you would like to get rid of the advertising. Unfortunately, the people who paid for the app originally ($30 back then) now have to pay for it again if they would like the upgraded version! They offer no 'upgrade' pricing or anything. They are claiming that it is a new app, so they have to pay the same price as anyone who buys it today ($10). The only difference is that it now syncs with Google Reader instead of NewsGator. And, it is much more buggy in its current state! To top it off, they are shutting down NewsGator, so the older app is useless if you want to sync. People are furious (as they should be)... mostly in principle. I don't think people mind paying $10 for a good app or to support developers, but in principle, they should support those who have supported them and at least offer a discount of some sort! There are so many parallels between this and Tweetie. They really should rethink this or risk bad PR.

Just Another iPhone Blog : Tweetie 2: ‘New App’ - Will Spit On Existing ‘Old App’ Users

Ugh... I'm so frustrated by this too! I totally agree with your point that current Tweetie users have contributed to its current success and they should not have to buy a complete new version of the app. Even though the price is only $2.99, the principle is going to really piss people off. That is the culture of the apps in the AppStore. You see it all of the time. This is a really bad move by Tweetie. Apple is partially at fault since they do not offer a method for upgrades like this. And, even though Snapture was able to do it, I think it would be much harder for an app like Tweetie to do the same thing. I think I read somewhere that apps are allowed to give up to 100 or so promo codes for their apps. Maybe there were less than 100 Snapture users or something. Anyway, I think doing something similar for tweetie users would be very difficult to administer. What they should do (IMO), is utilize the in-app purchase system. They could upgrade some of the basic functionality and charge $.99 or $1.99 for some added features. That way, it is still the same price for new users and only a little extra for current users. It would take some extra coding, but at least you would not be shunning on your current customer base.

Just Another iPhone Blog : NetNewsWire 2 for iPhone, with Google Reader Sync – First Impressions

Hey Patrick, I agree with your thoughts -- what a disappointment. I played around with it last night as well as this morning and feel the UI has fallen short. IMO, that is the main advantage of an app like this over google reader. There is also a lack of consistency between calling them 'starred' items in google reader and 'flagged' items in NetNewsWire which is pretty confusing but I'm sure that will be fixed soon. I have found the sync between those items to be spotty at best, but maybe that is because I have been using the free version (the ads are annoying). Sync of the feeds seems pretty good. I think I will probably try Byline or Newsstand. I wish there was a comparison of the apps somewhere. I.e., NetNewsWire vs. Byline vs. Newsstand (vs. Feeds?).

Just Another iPhone Blog : Will You Switch Carriers if There Are More Choices Next Year for the iPhone?

It all depends on how the new carrier compares in pricing to AT&T. Verizon is better than AT&T, but people will be in for a surprise if they think they will no longer get dropped calls and poor coverage. Pricing will be the big factor as well as policy for when new phones come out (discounted pricing?).

I noticed this last night too -- and what a disappointment. Like you, I bought it primarily for the free memory feature. I'll probably end up upgrading since as my OCD will get the best of me as I can't deal with having a badge attached to my app store icon. :p At least there are some new cool features added instead of just taking the free memory function away.

Hey Patrick, One thing that is really nice is 'Notifier'. It puts little icons on the top-right corner of the status bar to tell you if you have missed calls/SMS/mail/etc. Its a nice way to see what you may have without having to unlock to the homescreen. Also, PDAnet is great if you need tethering.
