The Freethinker : Possibility of Muslim violence forces a rethink over scholarly cartoons book

Thanks, Barry, for continuing to republish these cartoons from time to time (other bloggers do it, and so do I). I think it's spinless of a publisher to devote an entire tome to the cartoons that shook the world and not show them. It's like having a National Geographic publication that's words only, no pictures; David Attenborough talking about the wondrous fauna that inhabit the Earth, but have the programme go out in sound only. It defies common sense. How can readers make up their minds? The visual image says something a thousand words can't say, no matter how skilled the writer in describing each cartoon (if she does). Each reader's view will be different, based, for instance, on the expression on the face of the subject, the comic juxtaposition on images within the image, any number of things.

The Freethinker : ‘Crazy atheists’ force change at the Hard Truths Baptist blog

Barry said, "To be fair Andy, Tom exhibited none of the characteristics of a 'nasty Christian evangelist' ." Fair dos, Barry. I didn't meet him, of course, and I'm glad he was a nice guy. I was reading his profile, that was all. Perhaps there's hope yet . * * * William Harwood, what does "godphuqt" mean? It sounds fascinating. I can find it on a few websites concerning atheism, but no etymology (not surprising if it's a very new term). Or was it just a nonce word to rhyme with "God-fucked" and got taken up by others? Or do the p, the h and the u and q and t stand for something else. Serious question. I like new words and this sounds like one we can usefully use.

Tom Price may be cute, but he's got all the hallmarks of a nasty Christian evangelist . Pity more people with his undoubted speaking skills and a missionary zeal can't be recruited to the atheist cause. Imagine packing Wembley Stadium as Billy Graham did.
