Yes it may help one understand 'what are friends for' !!! in the context of social network.

However the key question remains - do we see a convergence of sorts between general social networking like facebook vs professional networks like linkedIn ? There is some literature I came across which suggested in times like these we may see the divide blurring to an extent.

The point we are discussing is to what extent does networking - around weak ties helps in the professions or business context. This argument applies to short networking gatherings we attend in the business school & exchange cards. The only difference being at such gatherings people come with a specific need knowing that there will be people with similar purpose attending as well & therefore try to make a win - win connection.

In the case of social networking like facebook - we network first w/o knowing if & when we may need to use some connection. When the need arises, the usefulness of the connection will depend on how strong the weak tie is !!!

I think too much choice & most of it unwanted may be a dampner - but the upside is with more developers putting their grey cells to work - there may be a few interesting applications that may come about & help generate interest. e.g On iPhone there are so many applications - but a few popular ones are there in almost everybody's iPhone....

I agree, LBS is well known as a top ranked business school. In order to increase its standing more thought leadership, industry partnership, placement leadership etc will need to be established. In addition credential based exposure is likely to have stronger impact rather then pure advertising on the net.

Its like - TV advertising itself became very expensive - particularly around important events e.g. Key football / rugby games the rates per 30sec commercial are very high. I think there will be good competition in all forms of media & depending on the product / customer segment one or the other media may dominate.

hmm there are a few sites that I have come across that do the same i.e. allow you to listen streaming music e.g. Raaga.com is a Hindi music site.
The revenue model seems to be via advertisements, & sale of CD/DVDs in some cases. Premium membership could be one opportunity as well.

Good post Jim. My view is that the community may help contain the free download element - but not significantly. A better way will have to be through technology where new albums are not allowed to be downloaded via the internet. (I have no clue how this will happen) - But given the implications for all types of media companies - there must be ongoing research in this area.

Anybody aware of this ?

I think if we do not innovate we will never discover what might turn out to be useful in the future. Hence in my view innovation & search for such technologies is a must even from the companies perspective to stay ahead of the game. In parallel they have to make sure todays demands are also met.

Whichever of the two they miss out - it is likely that competition will eat into their pie.
