Big Hollywood : The Top 10 Best Film Composers of All Time

Any list of film composers that doesn't list John Williams at number 1 and lists Jerry Goldsmith ahead of him loses some credibility in my book. Granted, it's a matter of taste. Williams may have taken some inspiration from other works. But to borrow a phrase from Mad Men's Bert Cooper, "Who cares?" This list seems to be focused on the main themes of the films, another area in which Williams is unequaled. But the score has to go beyond the theme music, and here's where Williams stands out. Most composers just pass the time with notes. A Williams score tells the entire story of the film just in the music.

Big Hollywood : Daily Call Sheet: Hannibal Lecter: The Series, 'Phantom' Beats 'Star Wars,' and Mourning Whitney

"“Phantom Menace” is about to pass the original “Star Wars” at the box office. You combine that with the fact that Barack Obama’s approval rating sits at 49% today and suddenly I’m starting to lose faith in my fellow countrymen." And Episode IV will take it back when it gets re-released in 3 years. Relax. Oh, and lay off Phantom Menace. It's not really that bad. It actually was drawing a fresh rating at RottenTomatoes before they started counting wishy-washy neutral internet reviews for the 3D version as bad reviews.

Big Hollywood : Hollywood Sells Its Soul to China's Censors

The MPAA is not a censorship agency nor is it a government agency. It's an organization created by the studios to regulate themselves. The MPAA will actually tell the studios how to trim the film to make it a better rating for their bottom line and usually the studios will comply. The ones who usually cry censorship if a movie is rated R instead of PG-13 or NC-17 instead of R are the directors, and usually only indie directors, who have the choice to release the film without the MPAA stamp anyway.

Big Hollywood : Media Outlets Pounce on Bill O'Reilly for Saying Houston Wanted to 'Destroy' Herself

Why must everyone overlook Bill's obvious point about Tony Bennett's rant for legalization of drugs: the drugs Whitney was taking were legal prescription drugs. Legalizing narcotics wouldn't have done anything to help her. In fact I kind of don't get Bennett's point at all. Legalizing drugs is more of a personal choice issue, not a helping drug users issue. You legalize drugs because you think people should have the choice. And if they OD, tough on them, it was their choice. Is Bennett advocating legalization with government-funded drug treatment? Given some of his nutty statements of late that wouldn't surprise me.

One that bugs me is when the PR people contact departments that don't cover what they are trying to pitch, when taking five minutes to look through the magazine would solve the problem. So not only do they show they don't read the product, they also haven't bothered to familiarize themselves with the beat structure. (Which leads to a list about how journalists can annoy other journalists, by taking on stories outside their realm of expertise, outside their beat and that are better served by another department.)

Big Hollywood : Broadcast TV Veteran: M.I.A.'s BirdGate 'Shouldn't Have Happened'

Madonna in an interview before the game was asked about the Janet Jackson wardrobe malfunction and said, "nothing like that is going to happen this time." Guess she forgot to knock on wood. If you watch the broadcast, a moment after she flips the bird the screen cut to a wide shot of the stage and then wonked out for a second. Since I didn't notice the bird the first time I saw it I figured it was just a technical glitch. Now it seems clear that the director saw the middle finger and quickly cut to a wide shot, and then they mistimed the built-in delay and were late with the obscure switch. So the video distortion was probably meant to block the middle finger, but they didn't hit the button in time, so the screen did its glitch thing a second too late.

Big Hollywood : Daily Call Sheet: Hollywood Cuts Its Own Throat and Bleeds SOPA, Letterman at 30, and Links Galore!

In home entertainment terms 3D is just a format for Blu-ray. It's not a next step or anything. Digital streaming isn't an evolution, more like a parallel development. Like DVD and Blu-ray being the dinosaur about to go extinct, and digital being the lowly mammal about to become dominant. Unfortunately the country's broadband infrastructure is too underdeveloped for widespread streaming to be as effective as it needs to be to yet unseat disc as the best way to watch content. When that happens, that would be the asteroid that wipes out the dinosaurs

Big Hollywood : Daily Call Sheet: Redbox Defies Warners, Seinfeld Returns, 'Hugo' Hits DVD Next Month

"Everyone understands the power of streaming and it scares them more than a little bit, especially those who don’t want to see the power a very few hold over our popular culture slip away. About six left-leaning multi-nationals control almost all of the entertainment content created today, and they do it through the intentional bottle-necking of distribution. Streaming is the first step to democratizing distribution, and that freaks many on the left out." I think you mean democratizing the creative process since it opens up distribution to independent content-producers and filmmakers. But I think the studios would say the point is more about production value and the money they invest in the films. Of course, the fact that they spend so much money to produce crap hurts their argument. If anything, wider access to the means for quality filmmaking should force the big studios to be better, but a lot of their marketing focus is really just about convincing people not only to eat crap, but to think it's delicious.
