The first episode had some adorable and humorous character introductions and seemed to introduce the eventual Mane 6 by good fortune. However, I was annoyed from the get-go that the resolution was so slapdash and the villain so feeble in her efforts to stop 6 mares she could have essentially just fried at any time. I 'excused' it at the time because, as we all thought "This is just a show for little girls" and (as I later learned) Lauren had wanted to do much more with NMM and create a season-long arc, but the Hasbro execs desired the 'little girls'-level resolution in just two episodes as they didn't believe girls would a) enjoy a darker story with real conflict and difficulty for the protagonists and b) have the attention span to make it through an entire season with just one plot line. It was understandable at the time. But seeing the thinly constructed villain and Deus Ex solutions (often with instant redemption lately) repeated over and over despite the clearly different audience than expected has become rote. Starlight Glimmer felt like a REAL villain in her initial appearance, as thought we were finally going to have a truly cunning and dangerous antagonist with clever ploys who showed up now and again... only to have her thoughtlessly engage in a time-altering loop and then become instantly redeemed, and THEN find out her excuse for all of it was that a foalhood friend moved away and broke her forever for some reason... she'd apparently never heard of 'mail' or 'trains'. It was too weak and a step DOWN from what the show had built to. Simply put: we can accept a show that is GROWING in complexity and storytelling from a simple beginning, but not when it's going backwards in those areas.
