Big Hollywood : 'The Lorax' Review: Eco-Hypocrisy Leavened By Whimsical Creatures

I guess I have to remind everyone again that the best thing you can do for a tree or any other plant is to burn coal. The CO2 that is released helps make the plants grow and everything becomes more green. Plant life undergoes natural sequestration as it is removed from the biosphere though sedimentation. Atmospheric CO2 has been declining on Earth for millions of years. Luckily man began to burn coal just in time to avert the death of all life on Earth.

Big Hollywood : All Four 'Indiana Jones' Films Hitting Blu-ray in Fall

I imagine that there soon will be versions with alternate endings. The first thing is to replace live actors with their digital representations. You need a good wire frame which you can skin. Andy Serkis already works this way. I warned them over at Celebrity Heights that the tallest man on screen was also the shortest. That would be Serkis as King Kong and Gollum respectively. Next we would need to eliminate all the live photography. This too has also been done with Sky Captain and the World of Tommorrow. Then the movie director would be the person who assembles the various elements in a computer. Once this degree of flexibility was obtained it would be trivial to let the user arrange some of those same elements as he might wish. This is really no different from my taping the O'Reilly Factor so I can fast forward though the segment when Alan Colmes comes on.

Big Hollywood : HBO Defends 'Game Change'... Again; And Here's What HBO Is Afraid To T

This is the kind of movie that argues for more reading and less watching. The book was terrible. I wrote a scathing review for Amazon. My review was only one of many bad reviews. Basically it was marketed as an insider look at both campaigns but it had virtually no insider observations. It was just a highly biased political account rather like what you might hear on MSNBC from Rachel Maddow. It was so hagiographic about Obama that it was downright silly. So I didn't need to ponder or analyze when I heard that it was being made into a cable movie. I knew it was going to be a hatchet job.+

Big Hollywood : 'Broadcast News' Predicted Journalism's Collapse

When I first saw Network I thought that some of it was a bit over the top. But now when I watch the O'Reilly Factor he routinely presents a "Sybil the Soothsayer" to interpret facial gestures. And Bill likes to indulge in an occasional Old Testament prophet rant about marijuana or soft judges.

There very definitely is a Republican Establishment. These people are also called Country Club Republicans or Rockefeller Republicans or Members of the Trilateral Commision. More frequently they are called RINOs. In general these candidates are more moderate rather than more conservative. The first big clash of Establishment Republicans with Movement Conservatives came in 1964 Goldwater race. Phyllis Schlafly described how Goldwater was an outsider - a man of the people - who ran against a small inner clique of Establishment Republicans had chosen a long string of losing moderate Republicans. So there is a long tradition of rank and file Republicans distrusting the party insiders. Those insiders had given us Nixon, Dole, and McCain. The Movement Conservatives gave us Reagan and the Tea Party. The problem with your analysis is that Republican Establishment does NOT support Romney. Romney does not have the automatic support of party insiders. In the last election he was the conservative alternative to the Establishment moderate - John McCain. McCain ran as a man who could get along with the Democrats and Democrat policies. Romney runs on a platform of destroying Democrat policies. One reason this primary season has been so chaotic has been that Romney has been opposed naturally enough by Democrat media but he has not been supported and defended by the Republican Establishment.

Big Hollywood : Yahoo! Lets HBO's Bill Maher Rip GOP, Promote Obama's Super PAC

little Ricky Santorum, the Jesus-freak in the sweater vest Huh? Santorum is 6'2" and Maher is about 5'6". Santorium is hansome. Maher is funny looking (not really a career disadvantage for a comedian). Santorum tries to be kind and decent. Maher's humor is the humor of cruelty. Maher, fool that he is, thinks that he's smarter than everyone else because he's an atheist. As an atheist myself I find this sort of attitude particularly offensive. American atheists believe in Judeo Christian morality just as much as Jews and Christians do. Do you really think atheists who don't believe in the divine nature of the Ten Commandments murder and steal with impunity? But basta, I've already cancelled my HBO subscription so as to avoid supporting this nasty midget. That's enough.

Big Government : Specter: Santorum Lied

Four years ago all the Republican candidates indulged in what I call an I'm Spartacus moment. In Kubrick's film each of the defeated slaves asserts that he's really the unidentified Spartacus. Similarly each candidate looked the TV audience in the eye and asserted "I'm Ronald Reagan". Gingrich is still claiming to be Reagan. But the real question should probably be, "Who is the new Goldwater?" I reread A Choice Not an Echo yesterday (it's free on the Internet). In it Schlafly accuses the Republican Establishment as promoting a series of establishment losers. She gives a description of the political landscape in which a small clique of Rockefeller Republicans stress party loyalty over ideological convictions. This is why Santorum's support of Specter is such a damning charge. Santorum is trying to run as a "movement" conservative. Today we call movement conservatives tea partiers. But Santorum held his nose and gritted his teeth and probalby lost his lunch to support Specter. He did it out of simple party loyalty - that cursed party loyalty that tea partiers dispise.

Big Hollywood : 'J. Edgar' Blu-ray Review: Solid Start, Weak Finish

It was 1964. Washington DC. I was 21 and 6'4". (that's important to the story) I was collecting on my paper route in August. It was hot and I was only wearing shorts (also important). I was practicing with my blow gun. (very important point) I stuck a dollar bill on a big tree. As it happened that tree was in the front yard of J. Edgar Hoover. There I was a large half naked man shooting darts with a blow gun. The limo pulled up but Hoover wouldn't get out. Kennedy had been assassinated not so long before. I began to realize that Hoover was afraid - or at least concerned. So I shot some more. And that's the story of how I came to intimidate J. Edgar Hoover.

Big Government : CNN Caught Influencing Debate on Obama's Behalf

I agree. King was OK. As to the contraception question, if CNN had had any sense they would have realized that the most likely beneficiary was newt Gingrich not Barack Obama. I was a little surprised that Gingrich didn't come down even harder on King. I had been expecting this question and so had the audience. This question was obviously in the service of the Obama cause. I expected Gingrich to come out of his tree as he had done so two or three times before. I expected more indignity. I expected the kind of answer that generates a million hits on YouTube.

Big Government : Romney Goes Occupy: The '1%' Need to Pay 'More'

Face reality. A lot of Americans respond to all this 99% versus 1% rhetoric. Yes, yes I know it's cynical demogogism designed to evoke emotional responses. But no politician can affored to to rely exclusively on rationality. For example, we hear a lot about school problems but we don't hear any candidate explaining that many of our problems are the result of school integration. Black students learn poorly and behave badly in public schools, but I never hear that from either Democrats or Republicans. I take his statements as an attempt to neutralize a Democrat spin. I certainly don't think he's being a "traitor to his class" like Roosevelt. He's a self made rich Mormon. I think we can trust him.
