The fact that they evidently enjoyed the bludgeoning suggests a special lack of empathy and insight. People who kill for fun in a particularly brutal, bloody and painful way are suspect. No murder is acceptable; those who enjoy murder for its own sake are nonetheless in a class by themselves. There is a reason animal cruelty is part of the "triad of sociopathy," along with starting fires and bed-wetting. We can only hope the two that perpetrated this shameful piece of subhuman torment are merely stupidly insensitive.
