Big Peace : Library Of Congress Funds Castro Propaganda Film

Actually I've noticed that during pledge weeks PBS always run shows that appeal to those who aren't flaming leftists--like programs on the Battle of the Bulge, the Civil War, etc. Then after they rake in the money from the suckers they revert to the usual left-wing propaganda.

Part of the reason for this behavior is the Left cannot use facts to state their case, because the facts do not support their causes. They are very much based on emotion, inner guilt and narcissism.

Some non-Muslim "antifa" Leftists created a major disturbance in Germany at an event with Robert Spencer recently. They used familiar Brownshirt tactics--the kind that we've seen in this country too, in places like Madison, WI and on many college campuses.... http://www.humanevents.com/article.php?id=43957

Big Peace : D-Day: 67 Years Ago Today

Thanks gawnit. Since I'm a Baby Boomer myself I didn't see any reason to mince words. Of course there are lots of us who either always stayed faithful to America, or like me, came back to reality eventually. But with the way so many of us flew the flag of the New Left, we've almost destroyed this great country.

[part 2...] This all went into a tailspin when we Baby Boomers got into positions of influence. And oh, yes, in recent years Baby Boomers have loudly been making what are supposedly tributes to "The Greatest Generation," but look more closely. The movie "Saving Private Ryan" is really a celebration of liberal, self-absorbed, unpatriotic Baby Boomerism. But we can still hope to have more good, strong leaders and more courageous people in the days ahead. We already have good people like Paul Ryan, Herman Cain and Sarah Palin fighting hard for American values, along with lots of other unsung people. We've lost a lot of ground in the last 45 years, but if we work hard and bravely we just might make our country worthy again of the respect of the men who fought in D-Day.

"Our men were courageous and our leaders strong" --Yes they were. Those men and the Americans who got through the Great Depression were as a whole better than we are as a whole. But I don't believe in the label, "The Greatest Generation." There have been many other great generations over the years, such as: --those who settled North America and carved out colonies where liberty started growing --those who fought and won the American Revolution --those who fought the Civil War, a tragic, terrible time for all, but one that was filled with greatness --those who built American free enterprise and a booming economy, from the early period of English colonization onwards --the many generations, from our beginnings as 13 colonies into the 20th century, who worked hard, saved, sacrificed for their families, communities and country, and believed in self-reliance

Big Government : The Law: What Is Liberty?

There is a movie which is effective in showing Robespierre, St. Just and Billaud-Varennes in action: "Danton" from the early 1980's. It might not be the easiest movie to find these days, but it is very worthwhile. When I saw it back in the 80's I was a leftist college student, and it helped change my point of view. It was made by the Polish filmmaker Wajda, and in addition to relating some of the events of the French Revolution, it was also an indirect comment on the ravages of Communism in Poland.

Big Hollywood : The Civil War According to Hollywood

Agreed, edoninmo, regarding the editorial work. Sadly, much of the writing on the Big sites leaves a lot to be desired. Do the editors do anything to justify their titles? I love the general ideas behind all of the Big sites, but please, lets raise the quality of the writing. Right now much of it is very poor. We used to see excellent scholars such as Paul Rahe making contributions, along with other lesser-known folks. Now I wonder if most of the writers just happen to be drinking buddies of the editors, or interns practicing their suck-up talents.

Has the writer Dan Gifford actually watched "Gone With the Wind"?! No matter what our current Politically Correct masters say about it , "Gone With the Wind" is far from being an uncritical glorification of the Confederacy, either in its movie or book version. Its slave characters are definitely not presented as living in some kind of utopia: Mammy, even though she has a relatively priviliged status as a house slave, is under no illusion that she is considered an equal to the O'Haras or other planter folks. In fact the movie is very accurate in showing how Mammy reacts to her status by denigrating the local "white trash." This was a common reaction amongst slaves. Also, Uncle Peter is shown doing the dirty work for "the white folks," Big Sam and the other field hands are shown wearily marching off to forcibly dig trenches, etc. Also in the movie, Scarlett scolds Ashley for relying on slave labor before the war, and Rhett shows his disdain for "Moonlight and Magnolia" Southern romanticism and Southern macho culture. And Ashley is clearly shown as a good-hearted man who overly idealizes the pre-war South.

Big Hollywood : HOWARD ZINN'S LEGACY: Instructing Teachers to Disobey Education Codes

Thank you very much, Esgaroth! I'm glad you've added your comments here. Sometimes I despair that the study of American history is doomed because of the damage that Political Correctness is doing. PC was bad enough in the '80s when I was in college. It got much worse in the 90's and doesn't seem to be receding much. I thought that a lot more people would wake up and start demanding more objective teaching in schools and "higher ed," and refuse to send their kids to PC institutions or make alumni donations, and here and there that's happened, but an awful lot of damage has already been done, with the evidence of how ignorant so many Americans now are about their history. I see signs of hope, such as the interest that lots of people have shown recently in the Founders, but I think there's a lot of work still to do, considering how so many kids are still indoctrinated by left-wing propaganda in the schools. I'm glad there's at least one other American out there who knows the truth about the Mexican War.

Big Peace : Why Do We Keep Bowing Down To Islam?

"Why do we keep bowing down to Islam?" --Its really pretty simple, and it should be obvious by now: our "Ruling Class"--those people who are majorities in government, the media, academia and public schools--do not believe much anymore in our Constitution, and they are relativists as PinHeadPatrol says. This applies even to many Republicans in positions of power (for instance Lindsey Graham). And this shouldn't be surprising at all after decades of anti-American propaganda in the MSM, public schools and academia. I suppose most posters here are already familiar with the phrase "Ruling Class," but if not you should read the excellent article by Angelo Codevilla, at http://spectator.org/archives/2010/07/16/americas...

Big Government : Slavery and Confederate Nationalism

Thanks Evil_Otto. Some of today's radical libertarians wouldn't approve of Lincoln. For instance, he was not an extreme free trader. But if it weren't for Lincoln's humaneness, as well as that of Robert E. Lee, the Civil War would have been much worse than it was. And John Wilkes Booth made things worse for the post-war South than they would have been had Lincoln lived longer. Also, some people denigrate Lincoln's great valuing of the Union, but to Lincoln, the Union was a vital safeguard, along with the Constitution, of Americans' liberties. This is why Lincoln and so many of his contemporaries believed that the Union was worth fighting for.

Abraham Lincoln was not an unblemished saint, but he did a great job as president and statesman. At heart he was a conservative--he believed in the basic founding principles, and continually praised the Declaration of Independence and Constitution. He also believed in and advocated for free enterprise and self-reliance. Some of his methods such as suspending habeas corpus can be legitimately questioned, yet remember--he had a civil war to deal with. I'd like to see how those who snip at his heels would act in the same situation! Also, if Lincoln had not been assassinated, it is possible that Reconstruction might have proceeded with more fairness towards blacks and southern whites. This is based upon his actions and statements during the war, which were closely studied, I believe, by the historian J.G. Randall and others. And for those who think that Lincoln was too slow in response to the slavery question, we should thank God that he was not a radical abolitionist. Such abolitionists, along with the Southern "fire-eaters," were to blame for the Civil War, not Lincoln. Lincoln generally took an understandably cautious and still humane approach to racial issues.

Big Government : Thursday Open Thread: Ataturk Edition

Ataturk at least gave the Muslim world a reasonable model for success, long before the Neocons went in with their foolish ideas. And so far those countries have continually mucked it up because of Islam. But still the light of truth shines here and there, however dimly sometimes. Ultimately, the likes of the Muslim Brotherhood and their useful idiots such as Obama and Holder will lose. It often seems hopeless and dark now, but keep the faith!
