Jesus was obviously a Jew but so were most of the Apostles and the Book of ACTS is all about the Jews. If you are going on the belief that there is some enmity between the Jews and Christians written into the bible than you are the one who was lied to. Even the Pope has finally come out with a statement that the Jews didn't kill Christ. Jesus was killed by a group of individuals who were some powerful Jews, Gentiles, and Romans who didn't like the threat to their power base. Much like many of the Democrats and Unions of our time who resort to name calling and violence when they feel threatened. Also whatever you think these people were doing God's work although not for altruistic reasons but out of evil. Jesus had to die so that we could be saved as was prophesied in the old testament and made real in the new testament. When I was in the army I met 17 and 18 year olds who hated Jews not for any reason other than ignorance and envy as you stated. They had never met any Jews but from what they were told we had all the money (Boy was I a shock a poor Jew), that we controlled everything and they believed it. However I don't have a problem the relationship you mention, with death of one of the characters family members I believe would have a strong impact on how he sees himself after that.
