Kids need recess. They can't sit for hours and concentrate like adults can. Studies show that exercise (PE and recess) increases test scores. And with obesity as big of a problem as it's getting, cutting recess is just going to contribute to that even more. Cutting out recess is going to cause more problems in schools, not fix anything.

Pit bulls are no more "wild animals" than poodles. All dogs are the same DOMESTICATED species. Your vet isn't an animal behaviorist, and personally if I heard a vet say such a thing I'd never go back (and I don't own or even particularly fancy pit bulls). Should german shepherds be outlawed? Should doberman pinschers be outlawed? Many breeds have had their time in the media spotlight. Right now, "pit bull attacks" are what's "hot" and it sells news, so that's what the media focuses on. The term "pit bull" doesn't refer to a single breed. A "pit bull" could be an american pit bull terrier, american staffordshire terrier, staffordshire bull terrier, or any dog that appears to be of those breeds or a mix containing those breeds. For example, a boxer-lab mix would also fall under the category of "pit bull".

Tell me this, when do you ever see the article title "champion show dog pit-bull attacks"? You don't. Why? Because bad owners and bad breeding are responsible for dog attacks. The term "pit bill" doesn't even refer to a single breed of dog, any bully-ish breed will be called a "pit bull" by the media. Got a boxer, bulldog, mastiff, etc? Nope, if somebody is scared of it, you have a "pit bull". This is a tragic accident, but could have been avoided. How? By making the dog owner accountable in the first place. The story says the dogs were a menace to the neighborhood.

And what does Westminster have to do with animals in shelters? Nothing. Reputable breeders are not the reason dogs are in shelters; in fact, reputable breeders will have a contract that a pet-quality dog must be spayed/neutered. They also screen potenial owners to make sure they are a good fit. And they have a legally binding contract that if the dog is no longer wanted or can no longer be cared for, it must be returned to the breeder. Most (if not all) of the AKC breed parent clubs run breed-rescues, too. PETA is barking up the wrong tree. Actually, PETA should take a look at themselves; killing over 2000 animals last year and only finding homes for 7?! That is ridiculous. But it fits in PETA's agenda of the extinction of domestic animals.

And yes, I have a decent life. I don't hang out with thugs. But who's to say that only people that hang out with bad people will be victims? My last apartment was in a pretty safe part of town, and I had a cop come to my door around midnight one night because he had arrested a peeping tom right outside my apartment! I didn't know the guy, he was just some weirdo and I just happened to be one of the people he identified that he was "watching". Scary thing is I had been outside alone walking my dog about 30 minutes before. And my dog wouldn't scare anybody off, she's a toy-breed fluff ball. And in case you're wondering, yes, I do have experience with firearms. I've been shooting since I was 6 or 7 years old.

I'm a 26 year old woman. 115 pounds, fairly attractive. Up until just recently, I lived in an apartment. If someone would break in to rape me or something, how could I defend myself? I would be easily overpowered by an average sized man.

You'd hope so, but the truth is that most people don't know different dog breeds, even animal control officers! - My papillon is constantly called a long-haired chihuahua. - My parents own an english setter and have been asked on several occasions if it was a dalmation. - Just last week I heard someone calling a basset hound a beagle. - Others: A shiba inu, alaskan malanute, and akita are usually "huskies". A beauceron is a rottweiller. A corgi is a fat dachshund. A belgian malinois is a german shepherd. A keeshond is a chow chow. And yes, to many people, a boxer IS a "pit bull". Other "pit bulls" are bulldogs, american bulldogs, mastiffs, bull terriers, sharpei, and many other breeds. I've even seen someone ask the owner of a black standard poodle if the dog was a pit bull! That is what is so scary about banning breeds. Unless you have an AKC registered dog so you can prove the breed, many breeds are labled "pit bulls" and the owners can't do anything about it. Be careful, your boxers could be considered "pit bulls" under most breed specific legislation (BSL). Sounds outrageous, doesn't it? Most BSL reads that a pit bull is "Any dog which has the appearance and characteristics of being predominantly of the breeds of Staffordshire bull terrier, American pit bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier; or a combination of any of these breeds." So if pit bulls are banned in your city, and the animal control officer thinks your dog looks similar to a pit, they may confiscate it. Happened in my town, AC officer was driving by and thought a family's boxer-lab mix was a pit bull, took it right from their front yard when the family was outside playing fetch with it! The owners had to go to court to get their dog back, and the poor dog had to spend several weeks locked up at animal control.

Notice that study says "pit bull TYPE". There are over 30 breeds that fall into that category! So you're comparing a group of 30+ breeds of dogs against single dog breeds.

Plenty of people that can easily afford $1000 are owners of pit bull type dogs. Here's one of them! Does no one pay attention to the kind of people that own the dogs that are involved in attacks? It's virtually always some white-trash or gang-banger that probably got their dog from a dog-fighter. The guy that owned this dog is in jail. The guy that owned one of the other ones in the last couple weeks was a convicted child molester and animal abuser. How many times do you see "champion show-dog pit-bull attacks" or "Canine Good Citizen pit-bull attacks", or even "pit-bull owned by a member of the upper-middle-class attacks"? Place the blame where it belongs: on irresponsible owners, not on the breed itself. The media is currently having a hey-day with pitbulls (which, by the way, the term "pit bull" is used loosely to describe some 30+ breeds of dog, so all these "pit bull" reports aren't even necessarily the same breed). A few years ago it was rottweilers. Before that, it was doberman pinschers. German shepherds have also been a target of the media frenzy.
