You can continue writing without any expectation of publishing it. I find that lets me take the risks necessary and lowers the rigidity of the internal editor. You can also ask "what can go wrong?" and pick among the worst things that could happen to further along the story. Keep raising the stakes by lowering the fortune of your characters.

A community of any kind may start off pleasant—everyone mostly knows what each other is on about, there are no ugly arguments—but as it grows it inevitably tends to normalise. Always it gets closer to the average and farther from the initial atmosphere. A fandom is held in the minds of its members, so over time the fandom changes to reflect more average values, ideas, and understandings. So the 'essence' of a fandom may be lost through its original members either changing or leaving, or kept only in a minority. If a fandom starts as highly toxic and grows (somehow), it will become less toxic, and if a fandom is abnormally nice it will become more toxic. I think this fandom started off on average really nice and became more toxic, but on an individual level (i.e. scrolling through the comments) there is a lot of variation and you can select what you like. The point here is that if the fandom manages to influence the official product and the product started as something special, largely the influence will be one of averageness if the product aims to please the fandom. So in that respect, it could be good or bad depending on which direction the normalisation pushes. A second point is that sometimes I do not want to know people's opinions. There is another show that I am very fond of and I don't say its name or read about it; my views of the characters are almost certainly more beneficial for me than any opinion read on the internet. This fandom has changed my perception of Twilight so that it is harder to like her, having interpretations that explain her behaviour more but don't factor in the imagination of a viewer relating to that character. According to all the elements that are canon in-show, there is a certain character, but an entirely different character can be created that is unique because of the viewer's relation to their conflict and assumptions made (additions to the character) that probably only that person can make. Literally, such characters do not and cannot exist, but is it really good to remove a symbol that is valuable to the viewer's/reader's life in the name of adherence to the text?
