I'm sure that Ben Pearlman is a quality individual. And I'm confident that the other commissioners, recognizing the inevitable flak that they would take once their decision was announced, still felt they were doing the right thing. But I don't think that the majority of citizens of Boulder County feel good about this. I'd like to see a regulation that an elected official can't be employed by the county for at least two years after the end of their term.

I'm sorry that you have such a negative outlook on life. (If I look at your comment history, you sure seem like a "glass is half empty" kind.) There are no millionaires in our family. My son also worked his way through CU. Through his own efforts, he won a scholarship - they're out there to be had - to study at the American University in Athens. He did it as his last semester, so quit his job to go over there. I guess it all depends on how badly you want something and how hard you're prepared to work to get it. I challenge you to find joy in the achievements of others.

I think that "20-something, Lycra-clad adrenaline junkies who are ready to mow people down." is a mis-characterization. I'm 60 and ride the trails NW and SW of Boulder 20-30 weekends per year. A healthy proportion of those I meet on the trail are over 40. I would think that MTBers are fairly representative of your neighbors and workmates. They probably ARE your neighbors and workmates...

Colorado Statute 18-12-105.5. Unlawfully carrying a weapon - unlawful possession of weapons - school, college, or university grounds. (1) A person commits a class 6 felony if such person knowingly and unlawfully and without legal authority carries, brings, or has in such person's possession a deadly weapon as defined in section 18-1-901 (3) (e) in or on the real estate and all improvements erected thereon of any public or private elementary, middle, junior high, high, or vocational school or any public or private college, university, or seminary, except for the purpose of presenting an authorized public demonstration or exhibition pursuant to instruction in conjunction with an organized school or class, for the purpose of carrying out the necessary duties and functions of an employee of an educational institution that require the use of a deadly weapon, or for the purpose of participation in an authorized extracurricular activity or on an athletic team. (2) (Deleted by amendment, L. 2000, p. 709, § 45, effective July 1, 2000.) (3) It shall not be an offense under this section if: (a) The weapon is unloaded and remains inside a motor vehicle while upon the real estate of any public or private college, university, or seminary; or (b) The person is in that person's own dwelling or place of business or on property owned or under that person's control at the time of the act of carrying; or (c) The person is in a private automobile or other private means of conveyance and is carrying a weapon for lawful protection of that person's or another's person or property while traveling. 3a only applies to higher ed institutions. 3c seems to require that the person be in the automobile. I would say that they were technically in violation of the law.
