404 Tech Support : Xobni - More pizazz and convenience in Outlook

The To-Do bar was introduced with Outlook 2007. http://blogs.msdn.com/outlook/archive/2007/06/21/... Instead of increasing the monitor size, you might see what resolution you're running at as that will affect you as well. The screenshots are from a 24" widescreen monitor running with 1920x1200 resolution.

404 Tech Support : Microsoft Word: "This modification is not allowed because the selection is locked."

Alexa, I was able to open the file you sent me just fine with Microsoft Word 2007. I was able to access the Prepare button, but the document was not marked as final. I was able to make edits and changes with no problem. I suspect that your trial version of Office 2007 (ships with a lot of new computers) has expired. I saved the file as a .doc (instead of the .docx) format and am sending it back to you. Try opening it again in Office and see if you are able to edit it. If not, I recommend using Open Office, a free office suite comparable to Microsoft Office. <a href="http://www.openoffice.org/" target="_blank">http://www.openoffice.org/ Best of luck, -Jason

404 Tech Support : Adobe Acrobat - You\'re exhausting; an open-letter to Adobe

Hey Louise, Thanks for chiming in. It doesn't seem like Adobe has improved any since I wrote this article. In fact they've been pretty annoying with the patch to 9.1 and to 9.1.1 to fix javascript exploits. I think, however, that you can upgrade from 9.0 directly to 9.1.1 in a comprehensive patch. FoxIt Reader is definitely worth trying out. I'm using it currently and it seems to do the job. It's pretty light on resources and snappy with handling PDF files. It's free, so you should be able to easily check it out. The only thing I would say is that it, like Adobe Reader, is still not perfect. A patch recently came out for FoxIt to prevent its own javascript exploits. You can download it here: http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader/ The free FoxIt Reader has ads embedded in the application. Basically it's a tiny button that advertises other FoxIt products. You can disable them by going to View and unchecking Advertisements. Hope it helps and thanks again for the comment.

I'm sorry that I don't seem to be able to assist you. I can only relay that this method, as documented in this article, has worked numerous times for me with Firefox and other application and for other individuals. Please post back if you do find a solution to your problem so that others may benefit.

404 Tech Support : Highlighting with Paint.NET

Thanks Amizzle. That's a great tip! With the mode set to Color burn the text and highlight are both very bright and one doesn't have to mess with the opacity at all.

Do you have a security group for the computers you're trying to install it on? Remember for a GPO directed install, the computers will be installing it, not the user accounts. You might also check out this article on simulating an MSI deployment: http://www.grantburton.com/2008/09/21/simulate-a-...

It sounds like you're doing everything right so it leads me to believe that this is a permissions issue with the setup.exe. Running it manually will use your user credentials, running it through the GPO will use it as the Computer account. The FrontMotion MSI's are made using a capture method instead of a true install. That means all of the install files are held within the MSI, which might be the difference in your case. You can see how to do that method here: http://www.404techsupport.com/2008/09/22/make-a-m... To clarify about the event log: You'll get a note that the setup completed successfully as long as the MSI runs from start to finish. Unfortunately, this doesn't provide any feedback about the setup.exe running inside of the MSI unless that executable does its own logging.

OMNINOGGIN : Anti-AdBlock WordPress Plugin

I'd say the proof is in the pudding. If people saw how many people were using Ad-Block on their site and reducing their revenue, they might be more inclined to use this. I think this plug-in is a great addition, the configuration provides enough flexibility to run the policy however you want. I am also an ad-block lover, but only when ads prove to be annoying or intrusive. Well-placed, relevant ads are the trade-off for quality content, I've learned from running my own site.

404 Tech Support : How to Add Virtual Machines in Server 2008's Hyper-V

That's true, mostly gaming is negatively affected by Hyper-V. You would normally not see the two (gaming and Hyper-V) on the same box, but there is definitely still a league of individuals following the Server 2008 as a workstation ideas. Hyper-V also seems to take the approach of making virtualization more accessible, so we might see more overlap between the two. Hyper-V does also slow down the startup and shutdown times as the Hyper-V services is started and stopped respectively, which is irregardless of gaming. I use Server 08 as my primary OS at home and game on it regularly, now that Hyper-V is uninstalled. Hyper-V might work well for others, but I had to find another solution. Thanks for your input, Rob.

404 Tech Support : NTFSDOS - See NTFS drives in DOS

NTFSDOS Pro will not allow you to run MS DOS programs. It allows you to view NTFS-formatted hard drives while you are running DOS. If you want to run DOS applications in Windows XP, you might try checking out a DOS emulator like DOSBox. http://www.dosbox.com/

Adrian, that's a cool trick. You might also check out this firefox extension to get rid of the iGoogle sidebar. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/93... It's "experimental", so you'll have to sign in or check that box.

Ralph, That's thought #1 in the post. You can use SSL for iGoogle by going to https://www.google.com/ig. But that still does not allow the Gmail gadget to work. I agree with you and suspect that SSL was ignored somewhere down the line, most likely internally between Google servers.
