BMW 1602 roundie or Neue Klasse sedan... you can get one for quite a bit less than you'd pay for a 2002, they are still attractive, fun, practical cars, but live in the shadow of the 2002 and are not nearly as popular.

My local public library has this book, I can't count how many times I have checked it out from there. An excellent book. Saab ceased to exist when they stopped making the original 900 and put GM engines in 9000s. If someone wants a true Saab experience, get a 92, a 93, a 95/96, a Sonett or a Leyland-engine 99, and experience the difficulties in getting parts, the smell, smoke, noises and oil/gas mixture of the two-stroke engine, generally poor reliability (although my old 95 and the running strokers I own now are reliable, they get the maintenance expected of a VSCCA or VARA Quantum Formula Junior) and odd duck styling. -Darnell's Auto Wrecking, Jalopnik

It's a Lamborghini Urraco. The Silhouette and Jalpa didn't have louvers over the engine, that is not a BMW M1, Maserati Merak or Bora, or Pantera engine, not enough cylinders or carbs to be a Miura, and no mid-engine Ferrari had that kind of air intake.

I'd rather have a Crosley Farm-o-Road, a Suzuki Brute or a Citroen Mehari. This abomination should not be called a BMW, a Glas or a Goggomobil. Subaru variant of the Toyota FT-86. Naturally, a US-market Subaru will be pretty well-equipped even if it's a base model, so stripping it down to no power brakes or steering, manual transmission, no bells and whistles except for a basic AM/FM/CD head unit with a basic speaker system (gotta have some way to rock out, even my Goggomobil has a stereo, and it's V-E-R-Y basic otherwise), Recaro seats up front and no back seat to satisfy the hoons, and vinyl floorcovering with detachable carpet mats. It looks like a lump of play-dough with wheels. I'm personally happy alternating between a '65 Saab 95 wagon (35mpg if I keep my right foot out of it) and a '59 Goggomobil 250 sedan (50mpg) and enjoying the smiles & comments I get from them. I wholeheartedly agree with you, and thumbs-up. I may take a lot of flak for saying this, but I support the idea of any first-time parent taking classes on it, much as one would get basic training in the military, go through police academy or learn to safely operate and possess a firearm, with failure of all classes resulting in permanent revocation of being allowed to have custody of a child. That *may* cut out head cases like the subject of the article. Assault 1 with a deadly weapon would be an ideal charge for this beotch.

As far as 70s and newer vans, not as long as serial killers, spree murderers and pedophiles own them and not as long as they are constantly flogged to death by large families, hippies and tradesmen. No Malaise Era or newer full-size van has any hope of being collectible, neither do domestic minivans. But 60s vans are already becoming highly collectible. My Chevy G20 had rear portholes, jump seats over the rear wheelwells, wood paneling, shag carpet, slot-mag wheels and quilted vinyl accents added by the dealer, and that won't make it collectible, even if it hadn't hauled countless greasy car parts, been puked in numerous times and gotten rusty and faded.
