The Survival Mom : 10 Questions I'd ask Ma Ingalls

Thanks Lisa. I've always enjoyed the Laura Ingalls books. I hope that in a TEOTWAWKI scenario, I would have the grace, dignity, and resourcefulness she and her family displayed. The comments are great. I hope this list is a catalyst for other Q&A. It would NOT hurt us to spend a few minutes thinking like Ma Ingalls.

Tammy, I'm interested in that too! The Wondermill's Wonder Jr. Deluxe seems popular, but the $200 price tag will hit my budget hard.

We're in similar situations. My 93 y/o grandmother can still "can" circles around me! She's done her best to teach me, now it's my responsibility to not let those skills go to waste or be lost to history! Our family's favorite pressure cooker meal is Charro beans (pintos w/ onions, bacon, left over meat, and seasonings). Rather than all day (or night) in a crock pot, I boil the beans for 2 minutes then let them sit for 1 - 2 hours in the hot water. Then I throw everything in the pressure cooker for 10 minutes. With a side of cornbread, in my cast iron skill of course, my hubby and sons are smiling ear to ear! Guess what's for supper tonight!!! ;)

I have been "on the fence" about investing in wheat berries and a grinder. Your article has simplified the process and eased my nerves. Question ~ I've heard a 25 or 50 lb. container of wheat berries will last a very long time. Can you estimate the whole berry to ground flour ratio? i.e. How much ground flour would I get from 1 cup of wheat berries? Also, have you ever tried wheat berries in a pressure cooker instead of a crock pot? I've been practicing with my pressure cooker, in case electricity prices or availability become a problem, and I don't want to run an oven or crock pot for 8 - 10 hours. I've hand several successes.

The Survival Mom : Are you a food storage snob?

Interesting article on 100 year old canned veal still being good. I'm not promoting the concuption of expired foods, but in a TEOTWAWKI if it smells good and doesn't taste rancid, I'm going to eat it! http://www.cancentral.com/hist_empire.cfm I've experimented w/ canned milk as old as 6 months past the Best By Date. Open, smell, taste...I've relied on my senses to let me know if it's dangerous. So far...so good!

The Survival Mom : Personal Survival Tips

We have an inverter in our van. It plugs into the "cigarette lighter" and provides a traditional outlet. I've carried an LED mini flashlight on my key chain for years. Grabbed it at Walmart for about $4. It's come in handy several times. Finally, having your finger on your fob's panic button is an excellent idea. A friend's son (2nd degree black belt) told me to carry my keys w/ one key wedged between my index and second finger. It makes a very good stabbing implement. He also recommended going for the assailant's eye w/ the key.

The Survival Mom : The Baby Steps, #2: Prepare your vehicle

Mom23, Excactly. He encourages me to run the tank to at least 1/4 tank before refilling. I admit that it makes me very nervous to be that low on gas. (I DO fill the tank when it's have full occasionally. shhhh!) BTW ~ He's an aircraft mechanic. :) Lisa, We're in an hurricane zone. It's a habit to fill several 5 gal. cans w/ gas and allow them to sit in the garage for up to 6 months. We use it for our generator. I like to fill them and forget about them, but that's just me. You could rotate the cans and use them in your vehicle; they're just very heavy to lift.

Barbara, THANKS for correcting that for me. We live near Houston so humidity is a major issue. Do you think I should add oxygen absorbers to my PETE bottles? I already have (homemade) desiccant packs in them.

Check with your mechanic... Rightwingdad says the practice of topping of your gas tank when it's half full can result in stale gas. This can be harmful to the engine. Of course I always get nervous when my tank gets low. I just KNOW that's when the SHTF will happen! I've purchase several bottles of Sta-Bil gas stabilizer at Walmart. Pour it in your red gas cans and fill them up. The gas will last over a year.

Agree with all of these suggestions. I might add Quick Grits. Cooked up w/ a few chucks of Spam makes a hearty (admittedly southern) start to the day. There's a recent email recirculating about the dangers of expired pancake mix growing spores and becoming a health risk. http://www.snopes.com/medical/toxins/pancake.asp I am hoping that placing these items in a PETE bottle w/ a desiccant pack (oxygen absorbers) SHOULD hinder the growth of these dangerous spores. Can anyone reassure me that this is an adequate precaution???

The Survival Mom : Happy Anniversary to Me!!! And a New Contest!

Lisa, Your blog has provided a community for fellow preppers. We no longer feel isolated, alone, and wondering if we're overly paranoid. Prepping is a muliti-layer desire for insurance against the unknown. Anything from a water main break or severe weather to a complete TEOTWAWKI scenario could put a family in a dire situation with little or no warning. You have put a common sense face to prepping. Being able to feed, clothe, clean, and maintain a "comfortable" lifestyle, in the face of adversity, is something we are all working towards. Thank you for your courage in creating this blog. It has brought us all together and we are better for it!
