Brian Anderson - ATHENA COMMONS - Undergraduate Research Conference: The Downfall of Women’s Reproductive Healt

Hi Hailey, The audio on my computer is not that great, but I tried to follow your presentation as best as the audio would allow. My advice is to connect women's reproductive rights more directly with privacy rights. These were affirmed for contraception in Griswold v. Connecticut (1965), and Roe carried on the Griswold assumption that if a women/couple could be free to prevent pregnancy in the privacy of their home, they could terminate a pregnancy with a decision ostensibly made in the privacy of their home. The power that conservative males wield now over women and girls is a backlash going back to Griswold. Dobbs' claim that the Constitution does not imply a right to privacy has now opened the door for all sorts of patriarchal controls to be pursued---including a Virginia law that may require girls to share their menstrual cycles with their schools (and the state). This amount of control over the womb is alarming and may lead to women's reproduction being declared a state asset--something done in other extremely patriarchal societies. Your focus on conservatives' concern for the fetus but not the child after birth is correct, though some steps are being taken, like in Mississippi with its extension of postpartum Medicaid coverage from 2 months to 12 months. This law, just passed, has been welcomed as a more complete "pro-life" policy agenda for Republicans, but it does not restore women's agency, it just gives them aid after they have ostensibly carried an unwanted child to term. I think your project is strong for zeroing in on the audacity of men in power to presume they can control women's decisions in very personal/traumatizing situations. This needs to be repeated again and again so people don't tune out the reality of a Constitutional right so fundamentally essential to an open society, and one extra important for those disadvantaged by societal hierarchy, being taken away. This is unprecedented and should not be normalized.
