Raymond Reynolds - Adrian Bridge calls for market reforms in Port industry - Harpers Wine & Spirit Trade News

Thank you Adrian for bringing to the attention of the UK market some key structural issues in the Douro and the huge challenges it faces on the cusp of harvest 2024. Costly viticulture - harsh terrain, low yields and labour intensive. Shortage of available labour and underinvested skills pool. Poor production and market strategies that don't build value, focusing on quantity and price in the short term. A false narrative of Port vs Wine. Reticent industry and regional entity engagement to positively develop a holistic strategy for this treasured region. The quality potential of Douro wines at the highest level is already known, present and appreciated in the UK market. Increasingly too the highest quality Ports are finding favour with consumers against a backdrop of declining demand for fortifieds. These quality driven strategies work as you know at Fladgate. However in the UK market now there are Douro wines and Port whose RRP's cannot be sustainable given the true production costs you have highlighted in this article. The conclusion we draw is that the "good" name of the Douro & Porto quality seal is being used for egregious commercial exploitation. The resulting damage always ends up on the terraces where growers and livelihoods bear the brunt of this zero-sum game. We must act to defend, invest and develop into the future this wonderful and special region for the benefit of all. Adrian, can we gather as producers and distributors in this market to positively advance the narrative for quality and building value for the Douro? It may go someway to addressing the broader issues in the region. Best, Raymond Reynolds

I'd rather not be caught up in the marketing hype and focus on getting quality 'wholeness' wines to the drinking public. Market analysis gives great insight but at the consumer end, I'm firmly with the 64% of restaurant visitors who prefer wine as is should be.
