Tech Cocktail : Top 15 U.S. Startup Accelerators and Incubators Ranked; TechStars and Y Combinator Top The Rankings

I think the TechStars Boulder advantage is still a mystery to the YC crowd. While both programs are good, TechStars Boulder is a big fish in a smaller pond and a closer knit community. I'm certain the experience is equally positive with YC, but maybe in a different way. From a networking perspective, there is some overlap. It is hard to argue there isn't an equally large network at TechStars. Many reported that the recent TechStars NY demo day was the best demo day they ever attended. The bottom line is that anyone considering both programs should speak with alumni to see which is a better fit. Frankly, I am not one for rankings as everyone's experience is different no matter which incubator they select. I am sure you can find just as many happy YC alums as you can TechStars. Select the incubator you like based on your own circumstance, not a ranking.

TechStars Blog : Yep, TechStars just open sourced the Seed Accelerator model

I think "Illuminate" is the perfect word because that is exactly what the SA initiative ought to do. I think people hear the $2B price tag and think all that money is going into the groups associated with the initiative, when it is not. To take your "Open Source" analogy a bit further, I think there are Brad Feld's and David Cohen's in every city. Some might not write blogs, or have twitter handles, but maybe they are President of the successful local bank or are currently giving their time through S.C.O.R.E. Mimicking what TechStars has done in Boulder, Seattle, Boston, and now New York can be done in every city. It doesn't have to be siloed into one industry like Tech. Maybe in North Carolina it can be furniture, in West Virginia it can be mining, or in New Orleans it could be oil drilling/refinining. There are all sorts of possibilities. Keep it up!

Feld Thoughts : Add Another Zero

Hey Brad, Could not agree more with this. You are essentially asking people to shatter preconceived notions of growth or whatever metric is might be. Sometimes people form mental obstacles that are more like mirages. How to shatter the preconcieved notions is important as well. I have another wise mentor who believes in the "50 Ideas Approach." It is simply, for whatever problem you are trying to solve, brainstorm at least 50 ideas of how to solve it. The kicker is if you cannot brainstorm 50 ideas, then you don't know your business well enough. Of course each idea will need the appropriate analysis (ie SWOT, etc), but that is secondary. Good post.

IntenseDebate Blog : Navigating Your Comments

I like this idea...rating the type of comment to further categorize. I may only want to read funny comments, sexy comments, positive comments. All could be represented with a set of icons the blog author plugs in with a few options for how they are displayed or how the icons are designed. This would be one step beyond the up/down rating and I think it would make the commenting system more active by an order of magnitude. It could also help separate spam. Good stuff.

Colorado Startups : Failure in context

In my opinion, this saying(s) means failure is inevitable in any business. Those who use this saying(s) try to prepare the listener for some level of failure. I don't see a difference in the two sayings mentioned, no matter the context. I think the problem is found in the use of the word "fail" or "failure" in either instance. Some interpret the word failure/fail in the absolute sense. A better word might be "roadblock" or "speed bump." A roadblock is an obstacle confronting the startup and to the literal among us, may be a better alternative to the word failure. Use of the word failure might condition the entrepreneur to expect absolute failure, whereas the word "roadblock" conditions the entrepreneur to expect obstacles in the road to success.

Feld Thoughts : Be The Kid Rock of Tech Marketing

I like this idea. However, I don't think Eric wants people throwing caution into the wind. It comes down to effective decision making and feeling a sense of urgency at all times. I have found quick decision making is better when there is a quick process attached. For example, having a set of questions (say three) that are geared around strategy/positioning, goals, and budget. If your decision meets the criteria of the questions...more often than not it will be the right decision. It is kinda like Malcom Gladwell's book "Blink" where he talks about instinctual decision making and how your gut is right more often than not. I have found the method I described in the previous paragraph a good balance between going with your gut feeling and quickly matching what each strategic question is asking as a way to further decrease the chances of being "wrong." Guts are sometimes biased :). On the other side you could say there is great value to being wrong because of the lessons one can accumulate. So, being wrong isn't always bad. Brad, I would venture a guess that you have your own method and I'd love to hear you talk about it.

Don Dodge on The Next Big Thing : Lauren bought a PC, saved $2,000 vs a Mac

I have to admit, I don't know what the "uproar" is about. This is positioning. I think this is a smart move by Microsoft in bringing up this point: Selection. The main point wasn't necessarily price or specs, it was selection under a certain price point. Price was mentioned, but only as a budget. For the budget person who wants selection you choose Microsoft. For people who value specs, user experience, and ease of use then Mac is the clear winner in my mind. Even above a certain price point, Microsoft spanks Apple in selection because of licensing While smart to concentrate on budget and selection I think it is a strategic mistake to continue with the I'm a PC line. Microsoft needs to strike their own chord an there are a lot of elements in this ad they could use. Microsoft is positioning itself as a value brand and in this economic climate where more buyers are pinching pennies, I think it is smart. If I am the marketing dept at Microsoft all I am thinking about is selection.
