Parcbench : I See London, I See France...

My guess is that she's 1) trying to get in the news, and/or 2) trying to distract her opponent and thereby hopefully do better in comparison. Perhaps a clown costume, or to be more in line with her current outfits, a Playboy bunny costume complete with bunny tail??

Parcbench : Letters to Juliet (Film Review)

I saw this movie and felt just as you do about it - but certainly couldn't describe it nearly so well! One reason I like certain critics is because they help me express what I'm trying to say. It IS predictable, but it's almost all the more beautiful for that because we can sit back and enjoy the ride, knowing full well in advance where it will take us. You are right that the movie is saved from becoming bubblegum by having a mature yet nonetheless attractive and vivacious Vanessa Redgrave. It is she who provides the balance and forward movement of the plot. Her eyes twinkle throughout much of the movie, absolutely believably, which makes it easier to get lost in the journey of the story, to want to go where it goes. Watching this movie was a really enjoyable experience; reading about the movie here makes it fresh in my mind and enjoy it all over again.

Parcbench : Parcbench Predicts the 2010 Tony Award Nominations

That was a horrid first sentence!! (not really, it DID get my attention, which makes it a great first sentence) *smile____"The 2010 Broadway theatrical season has come to an end." To me I heard "Well, you're too late. I know you''ll be visiting NYC in a couple of weeks, but all the plays closed, everyone went home, game over, you lose." :-) Presumably, there ARE still shows playing!!____Anyway, great review of the plays, the diversity of them and insights into behind the curtain. I'm looking forward more to hear the nominations and follow the progress.

Parcbench : “BRIGHT STAR” (Film Review, Trailer)

Reading poetry and hearing it read well are (for me) two very different things. Even my own poetry can sound better when others read it! "Bright Star" sounds intriguing if only for that part in the closing credits, but yes, for all the rest, too.

Parcbench : Whitney’s Comeback: Didn’t She Almost Have It All?

What a great memory to have of Whitney Houston, and how well you place it into context. The music industry is brutal, and for her to be continuing in any real capacity is a tribute to her character and talent, and perhaps to having a good agent?? Anyway, I really enjoyed this article.

Parcbench : A SOLDIER’S RESPONSE TO “THE HURT LOCKER”

Admittedly, I hadn't even heard of this movie until this article, but my husband has served a total of 26 months in most of the various and extreme conditions in Iraq. Having heard some of his real stories as compared with what the news and entertainment industries portray, and seeing the poitical and business influences behind them, it's hard for me to view any such movie objectively. The reason I read beyond the title of this article (obviously, the "soldier" part caught my eye since such is my husband) is the way you handled the topic, as an interview with someone who knows both the movie and Iraq. Truly, this was the best way to review this topic. As an army wife, one who can read a lot into this interview (and inexplicably is now getting very misty-eyed and choked up as a result) I thank you for your handling of this subject.

Parcbench : Julie & Julia

I loved this movie for many reasons, mostly for Meryl Streep's spot-on portrayal of Julia. My mother and I used to watch Julia on PBS, a show that "almost" made me want to be a cook (cooking is NOT my favorite passtime). In the movie, I can relate to Julie's desire to cook all the recipe's, but her obsession about them seems almost counter-productive, whereas Julia's "obsession" seemed to enhance not only her life but those of everyone around her. Julia earned her accolades rather than having anything simply given to her (well, having a husband assigned to a sweet position in France isn't bad). Oh, and this isn't a "chick flick" despite being very woman-focused - even my husband (even less of a cook, unless peanut butter and jelly sandwiches count) really liked it!

Parcbench : Taking Woodstock Movie Review

While it may have been more "Hollywood" like the classic "biographical movies" of the golden age of movies, maybe it was enough to give tribute to a pivotal event and to introduce a new generation to it. At least it gave more flesh to the idea of "Woodstock" and what it meant. (No, I haven't seen the movie, precisely because I wanted more of a pure documentary flim, as I've seen before.)

Parcbench : Patrick Swayze: Born To Dance, Died Too Soon

I've read and watched a few short biographies about Swayze, and you sum them up well by comparing him to Astaire and Kelly, perhaps with a dash of James Dean or other "spicier" element. Good article - neither sugary nor flat, just very human and real as he was.

Parcbench : New York Post Called Out by Out of Line By Umpire Betsy Gotbaum

Perhaps a definition of humor should include the caveat that "it will be offensive to someone", but then again, so is anything. In "My Fair Lady" Prof. Higgins says something to the effect that every time an Englishman speaks he makes someone else despise him. Has anything ever been written, said, shown, produced, etc that hasn't caused disagreement? For that matter, isn't that what art (in all its forms) and journalism are about, sparkiing discussion and debate? If Betsy's goal was to get attention, she did so, but not in a very positive way.

Parcbench : The Torturous Top 40

Great article, one that I think you really enjoyed writing - I can practically see a grin on your face! Unlike you, most elevators and such around here are silent - perhaps downtown areas tend to have greater "sound management" than more suburban or rural areas? It really is a pity that the US can use music without paying royalties. Of course, then again, if they have bought a CD, they have the same right to play it at high volume in public just as any one else, especially since they are deriving no apparent income from it. Regardless, interesting food for thought. Oh, and I like your Osama dream. :-)
