Besides, gotta vent the ol' Politi-hole, lest you blow a gasket. I had to walk away for a couple months just to ground myself back in reality. Now that I'm back, i'm kinda glad i was gone.

There has never been a time where shipping has been so crucial to the world economy. We are part of that world. We are the driver of that economy. Without global shipping, everybody suffers. Who is going to secure shipping lanes across the globe if we bury our heads in the sand? Russia? China? Europe? Nobody has the blue-water capabilities that we do. Being the "Cops" of the planet is not what we want to do, it's our friggin' obligation to do, because nobody else can.
Look back at history, for a bit. Ever since the age of sail, shipping commerce has come under attack by pirates, and it's even more significant now than it has been in 50 yrs. Anyone who wants to run away from the bad stuff in the world without analyzing the inherent consequences is an idiot.
(update) Lemme add to that... Where, oh where are we supposed to refuel our fleets if we are to secure shipping lanes, and prosperity for us and others? Are we going to refuel, re-arm and repair our ships at home? The increased ship count we would need, just to supply fuel to the non-nuclear fleet would be cost prohibitive. Having bases in other countries is NOT expansionism, nor is it colonialism. It is common strategic sense for securing safe passage around the world, as well as securing safe passage for our most desired possessions. Do you think that iPhones are built in the USA?Do you think that your shoes, shirts, sheets, pots and pans come from the USA? Do some research.
