Thanks for the kind words Tony! We didn't intend on any speed improvement, but maybe it feels faster/snappier because of the lower memory usage. Also, where did you see a poster? We actually haven't seen one in the wild yet =)!

Hi Paul, which country are you using RedLaser in (US/UK/?). Also, can you send us a list of the barcodes that didn't return results to info@occipital.com (you can use the email list features)? It can help us see what's going on. You should be seeing results from TheFind and Google in most cases.

Thanks Olly, it's definitely silly for them to just cut off the business we're sending them. Apologies again for the mistake of removing Google. We should have tested more thoroughly, especially in the UK. We appreciate the feedback from users like you, and we hope to bring back Amazon officially soon.

Alex, we definitely appreciate this. We agree that the policy seems silly since all we were doing was sending them business. We're going to try to figure out a way to show the results with Amazon's consent, and it might help to have people sending in complaints. If there is a way to do this, we will update on this blog. Hi Steve, yes you can do this all through the iPhone browser. Here are modified instructions with an example of Sainsbury's: 1. Go to the Sainsbury's website (www.sainsburys.co.uk) in Mobile Safari. Type in a barcode like 0043000014264 and do a search. 2. Copy the browser address and paste it into the URL box. URL: http://www.sainsburys.co.uk/sol/global_search/glo... 3. Notice that "GLOBAL_DATA._search_term1" is the parameter with the barcode. Type that into the Param box, and that's it! Param: GLOBAL_DATA._search_term1 Then hit build, and follow the instructions on screen.

Great post Kevin, don't know how I missed this in Google Reader. I've often struggled to keep up with AwkwardRules, I'm trying to see if I can get on a new post every week. Right now I'm averaging about 1 every month, which is kind of slow. It is really hard to create quality content, and I've got about 5 or 6 half written AwkwardRules that just don't meet the bar yet.

Just wanted to let you know that this post inspired me to create an admin for some stupid tasks for the payment system of ClearCam. I was just doing them through SQL statements, and it would only take 2 minutes each time and so I never bothered putting in the time. But now they take < 10 seconds. Not sure they're right for automation, but I've definitely saved time in the long run.

I assume you were running realtime mode? I would guess that your crashes are related to memory issues. While we are certain that RedLaser 2.0 does not have any significant memory leaks, we did improve memory footprint in version 2.2, and also improved scanning accurcay. Unfortunately, Apple has decided to reject all updates to camera-based applications at the moment, including ours. I'm still surprised you got incorrect answers even on RedLaser 2.0. I'd be curious to see your results if you tried again after restarting the phone and then making sure to not tilt the phone when scanning the barcode. We added tilt compensation in 2.2, but unfortunately we're stuck as I mentioned earlier.

Haha, that's true, I hate when it's a conversation that neither person is really that into, but can't figure out a way to end it. I've definitely done the "outroduction", if only to delay the other person long enough so I can wrestle past them.
