I would also strongly urge you to look into RENTERS INSURANCE. It was mentioned the owner did not have fire insurance, that is too bad , but that only covers his structure, not the contents.
Many times there will also be a discount if you group it with the carrier of you auto insurance.
It may have gone up some since I had mine, but back then (90's) it was $7.00 per month.
A small price to pay.

@FFSReally, I could be mistaken, However I seem to remember that if you can not afford a smoke detector, they are available if you visit your local Fire Station and request one.
@jsmonis You are correct, all the doors in a single area require a smoke detector. There should
also be one inside each bedroom.
I recently upgraded mine to the CO combination units and wired all into a series, upstairs and downstairs.
Many times the CO Detector will sound long before the particulate is dense enough to sound the smoke detector.

This reminds me of my days way back when. We were reading to ourselves Xavier Hollander's Happy Hooker.
The school banned the book when we learned that one of our teachers was a former "associate" of Ms Hollander.
As far as this story, the kids probably only realized some one was reading to them, and then the parents made the issue.
