.:Computer Defense:. : I've Become a Cyber Pan Handler

@Major Hayden: I'm sure that they would love addition direct download mirrors. To give you an idea of traffic, while I was Slashdotted it was 1 - 1.5TB per day, normally downloads are usually about 100GB per day. @Will Hughes: At this point the bill is at $1988.25, however the billing period isn't over, so I just have their sketchy expense tracker to monitor this one, and it's always 48+ hours out of sync. So I don't have a final charge yet. To those who donated: It was greatly appreciated... thank you. To those with advice for dealing with 1and1: It was also appreciated, I'm currently waiting on a response from them (been waiting 24 hours at this point)... I'm hoping to hear back on Monday.

.:Computer Defense:. : What is Ethical?

They put out a service that takes a binary, packs it with 10 packers, and tests it against 10 AVs... once again, they only thing they have done is prove that signature based AV is ineffective in even the most basic of circumstances. There's no strawman argument here, because their research is on par with the airplane and not with the atomic bomb. There's no need to feel guilt and no unreasonable negative impact.

To steal from Dre's comments... I also am not making it to Shmoocon this year and to steal from Andrew, I'm also Canadian... And I posted before either of them. Everyone knows you always select #1 :)

I think I'm the most deserving because this is a Con that I wouldn't otherwise attend, I'd be more than happy to blog continuously and there are some talks I really want to see. As well, unless IntenseDebate has screwed up I'm the first one to comment :)

Thanks for pointing that out, I happened to stumble across it in apt and just used apt-get. Apparently it's rather outdated. I've grabbed 0.9.0 from the twyt website and will modify the code to use it this evening.

If you want the Microsoft explanation of why, it's here -- http://www.microsoft.com/tag/content/overview/.They do seem to have some points that make sense. Other sites make similar points or list other reasons why these codes excel over QR codes. http://www.bannerblog.com.au/news/2009/01/microso...http://www.burningthebacon.com/2009/01/09/microso...

A buddy of mine asked me if I was going to install Ubuntu EEE (http://www.ubuntu-eee.com/index.php5?title=Main_P...I don't have any plans yet... I haven't experienced any issues, and I've actually never used Xandros before (but I have a friend who's a big fan and has been recommending it)... So for now it's staying where it is... I hear the change is fairly simple though.

@Eric,

Thanks for the details... I never meant to imply that it was a flaw in Tor... I was simply discussing a cool concept.

The captcha to relay mail is actually very interesting... I would love details if you go ahead with any testing of that.

There's a difference between installing drivers and terminating a critical system process. A big difference. Which is why Microsoft protected certain executables prior to Vista... I want to know why that protection was removed.

Actually yes... I think Microsoft should prevent the killing of processes that affect system stability, just as they did in Windows XP. I don't want something, even with admin access to have the ability to blue screen my system...

Thanks for the info Bill...
It's very dangerous when a filename crosses between legit, malware, legit...

I'd love to know Microsoft's reasoning for having it run in Vista and allow for a system crash if you attempt to kill it, instead of denying the killing of it.
