Having never before in my 53 years ever had to rely on the gov't for any social programs (ie: food stamps, welfare, unemployment pmts.) until Jan. '09, I am in the position now to have a different opinion of the unemployment pmts. plan. As a plant manager for a small manufacturer in central VA, I and 40 other employees took the hit when corporate made the decision to cut one of their seven production (coast-to-coast) facilities. Now, 9 months into being a displace worker, and with nothing "in the works", I am grateful for the unemployment pmts. I have been receiving. I still think that I will land a new job soon and certainly havn't given up hope. This economy is like no other I've seen in my working years and all I ask is that people realize that I and many many others want to work/don't want to continue to be on the dole, and would be in a world of hurt w/out the $1200/month in unempl.pmts (complementing my wife's full time earnings). My families life has changed like you can't imagine. My hope is that congress will take the remaining amt of the stimulus and direct it towards real job creation.
