I'm sure Patrick (Nicholas' dad) can tell you this story better, but I was driving from Creston to Nelson to visit him on a weekend and my car was about to roll over to 100,000 kms. So I pulled over at 99,999 so I could safely watch it roll over. I'll say that again: So I pulled over (and stopped) at 99,999 so I could safely watch it roll over. <sigh>

But the diagonal cameras (south-west, north-west, etc) could not possibly shoot down the street in a straight line. They'd shoot diagonally across. The only way a shot like the above could be taken is with a camera located at the centre of the photo, pointing straight down the street (as in this pic).

But the point of an HOV lane -- the reason for their existence -- is to encourage the driver to take another person with them and SHARE the same car, rather than having two vehicles on the road. In other words, the goal is to reduce the number of cars on the road. Your idea, logical as it may be, doesn't achieve the actual goal at all. And what it is too.
