I liked "Badlands" too. I also enjoyed "Days of Heaven" as a sort of meditation. But I thought "The Thin Red Line" felt lazy and way too self-absorbed and haven't trusted Malick to consider me as an audience member since. I'm sure this (Tree) has beautiful imagery and deep consideration, but as a viewer I need to be included in the process a bit more these days.

Hollywood by and large sells itself the story that its artists are still counter-culture heroes battling an establishment and overcoming anti-communist witch hunts, when the truth is that they are the establishment and Hollywood has long been full of marxist witches. That lack of awareness or acknowledgement of context keeps them cranking out product that preaches to the choir while steadily losing audience share outside of their ivory tower.

I really enjoyed a lot of his movies when I was younger. They were fun and seemed insightful. Now I connect the artist to their art more and his art looks to me like tired perpetual self wish fulfillment by a dirty old man.

The comics don't even have Steve Rogers as Cap right now, though he is back alive. Marvel must be saving his return for after the movie. Ed Brubaker is the guy who threw the Tea Party stuff in there and he has hopefully been kept pretty far away from the film script. Simon and Kirby's books are credited as sources, and that's a good sign. Marvel has pulled back on a projected run of "Captain America: Fighting Avenger" comics that was to have been an ongoing series by Brian Clevinger, the "Atomic Robo" guy. Clevinger is an admitted lefty, but he keeps his books balanced and I would've liked to see his take on Cap. It would surely have been less heavy handed than Brubaker's. I think Brubaker does handle the Falcon well though in terms of Sam Wilson's pride and loyalty. You can always read some Bosch Fawstin to cleanse the palate too.

Is that Dum Dum Dugan to Cap's left as they're busting in the door at about 1:58? Nice. I have hope for this movie as long as they haven't been too influenced by Ed Brubaker's ideas or themes. Marvel doesn't even have Steve Rogers as Cap these days in the comics.

It will be interesting to see how that pans out, with Hugo Chavez publicly defending Gaddafi just days before Sean Penn thanked Hugo Chavez for humanitarian aid in Haiti. The "situational" liberals will still support Sean Pean without allowing his associations to color perception. Guilt by association is only good for conservative targets.
