Hmm. As I research more it appears the Republican party was more anti-slavery but not really anti-segregation. The Democrats were not as strongly anti-slavery but in the '60s became the party of African Americans as they led the civil rights movement.
Not sure about this part though: "The Democrat Party, in vain efforts to make up for its past alliances with organizations such as the Ku Klux Klan, the leadership of the Confederate States of America, and the most staunch opposition leaders of the women’s suffrage movement"
