Gabriel Weinberg's Blog : DuckDuckGo is growing - welcome USV et al.! - Gabriel Weinberg's Blog

I have to say I'm shocked. I don't know if it's good or bad shocked, just shocked. I just loved telling people how I used a search engine conceived and built by one guy. I guess that's still true. Anyway, keep up the great work, and keep up the posting about your work.

Best of all is that you said you'd have an announcement in seven days, and you did it. True, it's just an announcement of an announcement, but it counts. Can't wait to see what will be doing.

Gabriel Weinberg's Blog : Will there be a long tail of Internet startup acquirers? - Gabriel Weinberg's Blog

The other element of this whole scenario is the fact that so many big corporations are sitting on so much cash, and yet aren't hiring. That trend will likely continue, but maybe they'll use some of that cash to grow through acquisitions. Then they "hire" the team that they already know is successful and they get a new product thrown in.

Feld Thoughts : How MIT Could Help With A Different Approach to the BP Gulf Crisis

Great idea, but why not take advantage of the rivalry between the schools? Do exactly what you say, but do it times 5: MIT, Caltech, Stanford, a military school and a team of engineering students from junior colleges, or whatever. Just something so that more people from diverse backgrounds get to contribute in ways that will help all the others. It's funny that you bring that scene up. I think I commented on that scene on your blog just a few weeks ago. We should have a "13" film festival. (But no Friday the 13ths.) Lastly, I just blogged about how people are expecting a political solution to the oil spill, and that's just plain silly: http://www.sco.tt/scott_yates/2010/06/the-oil-spi... The good news, however, is that the spill won't create a water problem.

TechCrunch : SimpleGeo Becomes iOS 4-Aware. Geofencing And Background Tracking Ready To Roll

These comments saying this isn't news are just bizzare. The iPhone app marketplace is enormous and this will add a huge layer of innovation to some of the most popular apps going. It reminds me of the person looking at a painting at the Louvre and saying that he doesn't like it. Someone who knows of what they speak says to him, "The painting isn't being judged. You are."

That's brutal. You'd think Kelly -- who seems so sweet -- wouldn't be involved. Ouch. Of course, the only reason the prank worked is that it was totally believable that an airline would screw you over in that way. Still... Ouch.

TechCrunch : Facebook: Calacanis Is Lying

Jeesh. Lots of negativity in the comments. The thing is, if this story actually was boring none of you would have read it or commented. There are plenty of "big" stories that get only a handful of comments. This story whole story is telling; it's an individual and yet concrete example of one of the biggest tech stories of the year: FB privacy. And just for fun it has two of the best known personalities in the tech world. Keep up the great work MG and TechCrunch, and for sure let us know the next chapter!

There's no way you are still getting those emails. That problem was fixed weeks ago. I got a few of those, too, could tell what happened right away, deleted them, and moved on. I did think that someone might get fired over that, and Jason wrote about that, too. Turns out he didn't fire the guy. If that's all you have to complain about...

TechCrunch : Google Voice Desktop App Launch Delayed, May Be Scrapped

And if you point Google Voice to a Skype phone number (more expensive from Skype than the Skype Out, but still reasonable), then you essentially have integration... But what a kluge. I can see both sides of that religious debate. I hope they figure it out soon. It took forever for Grand Central to switch to Google Voice. I guess our hopes for Gizmo5 are similarly going to take a while to be realized.
