Explore Portland Oregon : Portland Trail Blazers 2012

Thanks for the comment Mike. I see so many kids at the games - some are more sensitive to the noise than others. My younger son (age 3) wore ear plugs the entire time without a complaint. He actually liked them I think. It amazes me when I see really young kids or babies without any protection from the sound.

Explore Portland Oregon : Ripzu Indoor Skatepark

Thanks for the comment. Yes...I saw your other comment as well. Certainly, if I were to judge the skatepark solely on "flow," it's not as nice as Windell's or outdoor parks like Newberg. Except for the half-pipe, it is mainly a back-and-forth park. However, I write this mainly for parents with younger children, and Ripzu is an excellent option for them, especially on Saturday mornings. I'm not really rating the park for accomplished skateboarders.

Explore Portland Oregon : Windells - Off Season Access

Hi...thank you very much for your comment. Skates and bikes do co-exist at Windells fairly well; however, they do so because the park is monitored. My main complaint with bikes is as outdoor parks where there is no one enforcing rules and/or etiquette. Newberg skatepark works so well because bikes aren't allowed. They are put on a separate BMX track next to the park. To me, it's just common sense - you have a bike moving quickly without brakes. If it bashes into someone it's going to cause damage. Seems strange to put them in a space with skaters, who admittedly seem a bit more erratic with their movements. I guess it's just a matter of opinion. When I watch bikers and skaters in the same space, it seems like a potential accident waiting to happen - no matter who is at fault. I do appreciate your willingness to post your opinion. Thank you very much! Vince

Wow...I appreciate the detailed response. All I can say is that our experience was totally different. When we visited, there was an event for kids, so I think things were a bit more relaxed that day. I would follow-up with their administration. From your account, it seems like the volunteer was a bit overzealous.

Explore Portland Oregon : Leif Erikson Drive

Yes...dogs are always a tough one for me. My kids have been knocked down on trails right before owners say, "The dog is friendly." My wife used to have a friendly dog, and we'd never use a leash. Even though she was very tame, she licked people and barked. Some people were bugged, but most people seemed okay with her. It really sucked having her out with a leash, especially if no one was around. Dogs like the freedom to move around and run. The trails and roads are already overcrowded with people walking, running, and mountain biking. Off leash dogs present a problem, and I realize that now that the dog is long since dead. It's one of the main reasons I don't want another dog. I think it will be very difficult for me obeying the leash laws at all times. Obviously, many people with dogs feels the same way. I have to say Bill, I have been almost run over on Leif Erikson by mountain bikers many times, and I think they pose a notable threat to safety in the park, not to mention all the illegal trails. When I've suggested they slow down, I've been met with the same "screw you" attitude. Despite the many user conflicts, it is illegal for dogs to be off-leash. If we don't obey the rules, especially in Forest Park, the park is going to get even more trashed than it's getting now.

Explore Portland Oregon : Portland's Best Parks

On a hot day like today, especially if you're interested in getting in the water, you might want to try Dabney State Park, which is right near Troutdale. I haven't done an article about it, but it's right on the Sandy River and has a bunch of grills as well. You might want to check it out. It will be INCREDIBLY crowded, but if you go early, you might have some peace for a little bit. :) Hopefully, you'll report back on George Rogers' if you go.

Explore Portland Oregon : Old Salmon River Trail

Yep...I think you're right about that. We didn't see anyone biking. Because the trail is short (relatively speaking), flat, and often occupied by numerous hikers, most hardcore mountain bikers probably stay away. Thus, you're probably right that it might be a good option for kids' biking.
