exactly my point ! which is why average people should not have firearms in homes.

I got thumbs down huh ? well if its because you disagree with the fact of the father getting charged then what do u expect ? The children were minors and the firearm belonged to the father of the shooter .Who should get charged - the child ?
That situation is a good example of why our laws are there , had this man not had the firearm in the house , his own child would not have got hold of it fired it and killed his friend. How many lives were ruined because of the firearm being in the house? and yes sadly the father now realizes this and admits it.

I see both sides to the firearm in the house debate - I have children and I would do anything to protect them BUT I would never have a firearm in the house because of the children as the risk would always be there that they could somehow get access to it .
No matter what any of you say its true - as long as that firearm is in the house then so is the risk and it is a risk I would never consider taking !
It is easy to sit back now and say that you would aim for a leg or an arm or even fire a warning shot but at the time an incident happens , you are frightened , you are in shock , how do you then control your actions ?
You can't ! So if it is an innocent person , if it is mistaken identity then its too late once you pull the trigger .

Yes your right , the criminals do have them . We now have a real problem with Middle Eastern Crime Gangs and firearms are rife amongst them. The police have specialized Middle Eastern Crime Gang Units to deal with them and there are arrests made every day of those who have firearms, BUT I hate to think just how out of control it would be if they were "allowed" to have firearms and if other Australians were "allowed" to have firearms. I really hate to think about it.
I guess it would be like America then wouldn't it ? A lot more victims.

Thanks Griz for letting me know . i am in tears and truly saddened and heartbroken for this little boy and his family .
This story was a little too close to home for me as I am a parent of an 11 yr old with severe Autism . the details in the video were so similar that they could have been that of my own son and it breaks my heart whenever I hear of tragic accidents resulting from when our kids abscond.
and nobody understands , nobody gets it more than another parent of a kid with autism. The lengths we go to , to protect our kids and circumstances like this still result.
Such devastating news .

There was an incident in Australia where a teenage boy allegedly accidentally shot dead his best friend using his Dads firearm . The father is facing charges and rightfully so.
God help us if Australia ever allows people here the right to bear arms , no way , not a chance I will never understand it , guns should be for farmers and protection/police services and no one else !

The moment I heard this story I looked at my mother , she looked at me and we both said it at the same time - "This smells a bit fishy".
Its awful if the man is telling the truth but I just cant get past the fact that you would shake the person next to you FIRST and tell them someones in the house .
Wouldn't you?
Very very sad for the lady and her family.
