This was in 2003 and I made sure that I was pre-approved for a certain amount and then I only looked at homes in that price range. I made sure to get a 30 year fixed rate, too. Then a few years later I refinanced and got a lower fixed rate. Having perfect credit really helped as well. You just have to be smart about it and know what you can and can't afford instead of having someone else tell you.
