Offbeat Mama : Who's watching the baby?

I've known so many couples with dad taking the first year off work (woot woot, Canada!) that it's just so normal, and I'm really sad for the people who make these rude comments, because their lives are a little closed and small. Becca - I know in most places in BC there is a men's, women's, and "family" restroom, which is nice!

Hey hey hey! What's with the stereotyping?? My Oma wasn't a tea-cup-and-doily grandma, and she *wasn't* a lesbian; at 60 she lived in the back of her truck on a tiny island while she build a small cabin to live in. And I will certainly be a non-lesbian "let's go hiking and build shit" kind of grandma (and mom!). Sounds like they are just kick-ass ladies, regardless of their sexual orientation. :)

Offbeat Mama : How I want to avoid mommy martyrdom

Awesome, amazing post. Tangentially-but-substantially-related: my parents are work martyrs. They own a business together, and they work harder than anyone else ever has in the history of humankind. They have employees, and volunteer offers all the time, but since no one else can do it like they do....they end up doing everything themselves. It's definitely all about control issues, the same as with mommy martyrdom. My sister-in-law just had baby #2, and they're really feeling the impact of the extreme mommy martyrdom with baby #1....baby #2 came by c-section so they need more help than last time, but everyone seems to have backed away because baby #1 won't let ANYone other than mommy help her with ANYthing. It's definitely a family learning process for everyone, myself included! My friend remembers repeating to herself "my husband needs to find his own path and equilibrium with the baby" whenever he wasn't doing it her way. She was aware of her own control issues, and sometimes left the room or the house to make sure she wouldn't jump in there. :)

This reminds me so much of the OBB post about expectations...because sometimes you may not realize what your expectations are until someone violates them, around marriage, child rearing, and so many other things. I love that you are so aware of this and actively working to strike that balance, as hard as it is, because you want what is best for your son. :)

Offbeat Mama : Conflict-free bling from Brilliant Earth ... and "push presents"

A gift seems like a lovely idea - though I'm all about giving presents just because, and not for any specific reason like birthdays or other festive occasions. ...I think I just object to the term "push present".

Offbeat Mama : Gender neutral clothes & the official palette of newborns

I'm dying to order that book, mostly because I'm obsessed with the brain. One of my favorite studies had men and women playing with infants clad only in diapers. Some participants were told their assigned baby was a girl, others were told it was a boy. Results? People who thought they had girls (regardless of actual gender) faced them toward themselves and talked to them. People who thought they had boys faced them outward and encouraged them to play with external stuffs. Perceiving that girls are "more social" actually creates more social creatures, due to how we treat them? I don't believe anything is *solely* nature or nurture, but am always interested in looking at things from new angles.
