I'm in for that solution, but I'm not waiting for the latter two. They'll adapt on their own because the people will demand it. Maybe that's part of what's happening now, but these actions (protesting) alone won't fix the problem. Acting on behalf of what's best for *you* will go a long way toward it. I'm not talking \"selfishness\" - that's bad - but creating peace at home before attempting to fix others.

I strongly believe that there is far more at play here than simple blame. Again, I'll go back to let's take action, and stop with anecdotal stories of hardship from the news. Let's get in there, nice and deep, and fix things as we can. Let's start with beliefs, blame, and outlooks.

I'm working on a solution to this problem, at the street level. I'll make the project public once there's something to announce. But I can tell you this without a doubt - it'll be community driven, and won't involve the government in any way. It can't, because the government is part of the problem. When people won't go get a job because they'll lose their unemployment benefits, the system is broken. When a family can't work because of child care costs - and their lives are more than subsidized by the government, there's a problem. This is a cycle, and it'll be perpetuated with government provided healthcare. What motivates anyone to do anything when everything is provided, and paid for by you and I? I'm OK with these programs with limits, and now there are no enforceable limits. This is not us I'm referring to. It's the people that need help most. The people that pay no taxes because they have little to no income. Let's stop bitching about how terrible everything (the economy, the terrible banks, the stingy wall street jerks, etc. etc.) is and start fixing it. As you've said, sitting behind a $2k laptop in NYC defending the 99%-ers isn't doing anything. Creating a solution to the problem(s) will, and I fully hope you'll be involved. Deal?

Yep, we simply disagree on this. You're looking to government to solve the world's problems. I believe the people can fix this problem, over time. It will take a tremendous amount of focus and energy by the people that need it most. All good things do. On the other side of this, government will have less power, financial institutions will collapse (and that's OK), and the people will again have the power to build a future. There is no way the government can/is capable/can afford to fix everyone's problems. They are NOT the savior here... individuals are - powered by their community and family. That changes everything. Again, the bubble thing is offensive - so let's assume the opposite. That's that I'm not basing any decisions or opinions on what I see in Colorado. As a matter of fact, I know that there are people struggling everywhere, including Dallas, TX where the cost of living is at least half of what it is here in Colorado. They're suffering in rural Arkansas where you can buy a whole home for $9,000, and the cost of living is dirt. I've been here, and done this... it's a voice from my experience in life, not pie in the sky opinions based on the fear mongering CNN and FOX tv news. Turn off the news, and build your community - from the ground up... it WILL get better. This is a sickness of the community - it's financial ignorance, and it's people having lost hope for the future. That can all be fixed - but the firs step is helping people see past the fear/doom/FUD that politicians and "civic leaders" are spewing.

You're missing the point here. With proper education - be it public schools, or community participation, these problems will not affect most of America. I completely and totally agree that those responsible should be held accountable - and that they haven't been is disgusting. But remember, they were selling products to people - and those people were putting their signatures on the paper. The buyer is as responsible, if not more so, than the seller.

There is a true struggle in America. Minimum wage is exactly that - the minimum a single person needs to live a reasonable lifestyle. Even then, it requires a level of financial knowledge that's simply not present in lower income communities. Instead it's pay day loan, rental stores, and so on. There are many businesses that attempt to supply these people their version of the American Dream. At the end of the day, this problem can only be solved by changing the beliefs, spending habits, and vision of those most affected.

Hey Amy, thanks for the comment! Why does "wealthy" sound like such a dirty word these days? I've met a number of people that are screwed financially and just believe it'll all work out (due to the "Abundance" mentality). It's much like letting go of the steering wheel and saying "It's in god's hands now." In order to change your life, you have to take the wheel and drive. So happy to see you're allowing yourself to drive! :)

There are always edge cases where a lack of preparation leads to less than ideal situations. Imagine if 20 years ago these practices were put in place... there'd be more than enough cash to cover expenses by now. In fact, 20 years of investing would leave just about anyone in a really nice position to make it through a year of unemployment. Doubling up on the jobs that are out there - whether or not they're the perfect job - will keep the bills paid. There's always work to be done - it just may not be ideal or in the same pay grade. If you (or whomever) can't sustain the lifestyle you were once accustomed to because of a layoff, it might be time to adjust lifestyle to income, at least for the short term. It's a sacrifice, but it's better than starving and going in to debt to sustain a dead end. We live on half of our income, but we've built a lifestyle that supports it, and we live well. :)

Stick to it man! It's not hard, you just have to relearn how to say no to yourself until you can actually afford stuff. :) Totally agree re a home loan, as long as it's reasonable and not subprime. Payday loans prey on the poor, but the problem isn't the loans - it's education, and decades of habit.

It's about risk. Most people that I've spoken with that have credit card debt don't pay off their balance every month, and use the credit to buy things they don't have cash for. They're OK with making payments on "stuff they need" for their lives. If you have the money anyway, use debit card - the exposure exactly the same on a Visa credit card as they are on a Visa debit card. If your goal is collecting rewards for being a good consumer, that's your thing (I don't buy it). If your goal is building wealth, skip the rewards and reduce your risk and exposure. This is about behavior, not math. You can do exactly the same thing (splitting personal and business) by using debit cards on separate checking accounts as well. Just my thoughts. :) P.S. Interest is bad, but the exposure that having/using credit brings isn't worth it. Again, my opinion. :)

From Michael : The Depressed Southern Small Town Economy

So you're making an analogy to book and record stores - technology and convenience wins? I can see a little of that, but frankly if you were to drop 10 gigabit fiber to the town center with 20 megabits to the home, information workers would flock like bees to honey. There are lots of reasons small towns have failed, and in my post I may have been a little harsh with Walmart, but I believe that apathy has played a larger part in their decline than external circumstance. Maintaining the status quo and ignorance in the government and city leaders are also responsible.
