I used to work at a baptist camp and my boss used to always tell us "no kissing. kissing leads to sex, which leads to dancing." I thought it was hilarious and we started saying it all the time.

Yes! Thank you. I hate it when the bulletin is all shiny and full of hip activities and I can't take notes. I want to take notes. I need to take notes. I feel like I'm not paying attention if I'm not taking notes. It's possible that this is a result of my dad grading my sermon notes starting in the 3rd grade to "help prepare for college", but I don't think so.

I grew up in a church where a LONG sermon was 25 minutes. In fact, my entire wedding was about 25 minutes and we had a bunch of music, plus my dad (also my pastor) cried for about 5 minutes.
My pastor now is pretty good about staying on point and not rambling, but when he is gone the retired pastor from our church often preaches. And I often volunteer to keep the nursery or work in children's church. He preaches about 6 sermons, all of which are too long and not well-organized. I can hardly bear to listen. Because my dad was an excellent teaching pastor, who still kept it short and never boring, I'm a sermon snob. But don't judge me, so is everyone else, they're just not saying it.

One of the reasons I love my church: youth-led Sunday. Instead of mediocre day-off time, the students get to share music with our (smaller, country-ish, more traditional) church- with the help of the worship pastor and reflecting the hard work that they put in all the time to lead their peers in worship and bible study. We also have kids who actively participate in our worship on weekly basis, so it is not that huge of a difference. But what I love most about it is our sweet older people (who don't get the music at all and use the hymnal even though words are on the screens) asking to "sing those songs that the young people do" all the time because the love our kids and love to see them worship and grow in their walk and their roles in the Body. It's cool. And rare.
