Not at all. Films are an audio/visual medium and great films use those components in ways that can't sufficiently be adapted into books; could you imagine a novelization of The Seventh Seal?

Successful film adaptations turn their source material into something new. Going the other way around, you'd have to do that too, but there's very little market or demand for, say, a big time author writing his or her novelized vision of Inception.

But who knows? It could be cool.

Your last argument (that gay people should call marriage something else) kind of misses the point. Yes, they should have the same rights/privileges as straight couples. That's a no-brainer. But beyond that, they want to get married because...marriage is important. Words matter. If they call it something else, it's "separate but equal" all over again.
